Friday Fandom Reflections

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-07-20 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Today's topic is fandom and music. Is there a particular song or album that calls to mind a particular fic or pairing? Is there a song or album that you like to listen to when you are writing, drawing or doing other fandom related things? How does music remind you of or relate to your fandoms?

My associations are kind of weird.

Every time I hear 'I Swear' by All-4-One I think of This Way Lies Camelot by scoradh and cynicalpirate. The only reason is because I wanted to listen to something relaxing and that was the only relaxing song on my iTunes. So I put it on repeat for three-ish hours while I read. If I recall the fic correctly, the song kind of fits.

Also, the Ray LaMontange's song 'Hold You In My Arms' is PERFECT for my Star Trek DS9 OTP wtf pairing of Vic Fontaine/Nog. The only fic for this pairing is in my head, though.

That pairing should be outside of your head and available for all of us to read. Just saying. LOL

Watching fanvideos usually cements a song for a particular pairing or character for me. Usually quite unwillingly.

I can't read Transformers fanfic without listening to rock music. It just feels wrong. Usually it's Queen, The Animals, or The Guess Who, but pretty much any rock will do.

Haha, I listen to metal or 'epic' instrumentals while reading TF fic, but I can totally get listening to rock.

I think "Change" by Monkey Majik is the perfect XXXHolic song.

I always tend to project fandoms onto really dramatic songs, even if they barely have anything to do with each other. I also do the same with old Linkin Park songs because of all those damn DBZ AMVs I watched when I was tewlve. :I

Oh, and "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones will never not be my Silent Hill 2 song.

Re: Friday Fandom Reflections

(Anonymous) 2012-07-21 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
i have to wonder if that's why so many people equate Linkin Park songs with like...every fandom. Were we all brainwashed when we young by all the fan videos? Because every fandom I've been in has at least thirty amvs/cmvs/gmvs with a Linkin Park song on it.

Re: Friday Fandom Reflections

[personal profile] streetcake 2012-07-21 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Pfff, I think I saw literally more than a dozen LP music videos for DBZ alone when I was in my preteens. For every fandom I was in back then I could always find a handful of lInkin Park AMVs for it. I do think there was some brainwashing that happened, albeit unintentional.

I have to shamefully admit that I was one of those Linkin Park amv makers (of Naruto actually, got pretty BNF-ish in a small corner of Youtube for a while lol). I just did it because I thought the lyrics were super deep back then xD

I usually prefer lyricless instrumentals while I'm writing - I'm a subvocaliser so it's usually easier for me to write if there's no other words around to interfere with my clumsy brain. I have to know a song well before I can add it to my writing playlist, well enough that I won't focus on the words at all.

ETA: I am so much about the Information Society version of Are Friends Electric for Solid Snake/Gray Fox that I really just need to learn how to make vids and take a stab at it.

I have a playlist called 'Superheroes' which is what I usually listen to when writing any sort of action scene. It's mostly rock/action type music, and the content is pretty predictable. (Kryptonite, Knights of Cydonia, This is War, etc.)

I assign songs to pairings/fandoms all the time subconsciously though, I go all AMV in my head when I'm listening to music sometimes.

Well, I have an incomplete mental Dark Brotherhood fanmix that fits both the Oblivion and Skyrim DB. Songs include "He Had It Coming" from Chicago (for the ladies),"Bodies" by Drowning Pool, "Every Breath You Take" by The Police (for the stalkery aspects of the job) and "I'm Sorry" by Margaret Cho. I had some others but I'm totally blanking out on them right now.

Also, the song "Walking on Broken Glass" makes me think of Seven of Nine for some reason. There are a few others that make me think of fannish stuff, but like I said, I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

"Broken Strings" by James Morrison and Nelly Furtado is House/Cuddy to me; "No Light, No Light" by F+tM is Charles/Erik, as is "Turning Tables"; "The Story" by Brandi Carlile is Remus/Sirius; "Personal Jesus" is Loki; "I Am Not A Robot" is Dean/Cas (as are many other songs); basically all of The National's High Violet is Richard Harrow (I was writing fic and listened to that and now cannot separate my feels about the two and aaaaugh aarghsadasnds it hurts); various Lana Del Rey and some Fiona Apple is Irene Adler, etc, etc. Back in college I listened to film scores while writing papers, and I still do that now with fiction/other stuff, though sometimes I need character-specific stuff. Music & writing are inextricably linked for me, basically; I have to stop myself from making fanmixes for everything I write. (And sometimes I don't stop myself. Dohohohoho)

That's a great Remus/Sirius song!

(I also love finding other Remus/Sirius shippers <3)

Personally (now that I think about it) I like "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues" (Elton John) for when they're young, and "Guiding Light" (Muse)for after Sirius dies.

For some reason I almost put "spoiler alert" before "Sirius dies" but I realized that OOtP has been out for ten years and then I felt really old.

There are some songs that kinda-sorta remind me of pairings, but then there are songs that are like WORD-FOR-WORD perfect and I have to remind myself that they're not actually written about them, and "The Story" is one of those (specifically, Remus' POV to Sirius). Ugghh, those two. ♥ ♥ I never would've thought of that Elton John song, but I like it!

(and hee, god, I know what you mean. I remember reading that the first time after buying it at midnight and being utterly in denial. GAH, Sirius feels ;____;)

I went to this lock in at my daycare (I was nine) so I didn't pick up the book til eight the next morning, but yeah I remember reading all day and being very sad at the end.

I didn't really appreciate the Marauder era for how interesting it was though until recently. I only started shipping Remus/Sirius (with eventual Tonks) about two years ago after I read The Shoebox Project.

I know, I'm /very/ late to the game.

Ugh though, MARAUDERS WHY MUST YOU ALL BE SO SAD AND TRAGIC NONE OF YOU HAD HAPPY ENDINGS.

I LOVE Marauder era; I'd give anything for a book--or hell, a whole other series--about those years. :P Remus/Sirius/Tonks is my jam; I'm all about the OT3s. Remus is my fave forever, but I recently wrote fic involving Sirius and I remembered how much I utterly love him and I was like 'aahh halp drowning in feels' and it was...challenging. I bring this upon myself.

BUT SERIOUSLY THEY ALL DIED PREMATURELY. WHAT IS THAT SHIT.

I CAN NEVER FIND SOMEONE WHO OT3S THAT OMG AND YOU DON'T HATE ON IRENE YOU LIKE MUSIC FOR HER.

WE MUST BE FANDOM SOULMATES.

JK, but it's nice to meet someone else with similar fandom interests.

I almost said that Sirius was my fave forever but also Remusssss.

Do you know of any good, organized Marauder's era rec lists for fic/art? Late last year I binged on the "Coffee and Chocolate" rec list and the "TV tropes" rec list, but then I ran out of decent fic and then in December I found Sherlock and became way more involved in that fandom than I ever thought I would at ALL (Jesus god, I don't know how something with only six episodes is so addictive), so I really haven't looked for fic for them for a while.

This is the fucking cheesiest thing ever, but I can't listen to Christina Perry's "A Thousand Years" without thinking about how there are so many versions of Sherlock Holmes and Watson and how in every iteration they were meant to be together (as love-of-your-life BFFs), basically.

Holmes & Watson (and especially John and Sherlock) would totally loathe that song too.

Also this fanvideo of "I can't help falling in love" for Sherlock made me unable to listen to that song (especially with that singer) without thinking of them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAYp8HIfnHs

Oof that video is gorgeous, though.

I am not even a shipper of that pairing DAMMIT.

Sting's Shape of My Heart and Counting Crow's Goodnight L.A. will always make me think of Phoenix Wright from Apollo Justice. Anberlin's Reclusion is my go-to for Harry Potter. Anything sad will always put me in the mood for Glee. No idea why.
