accidental controversial story ideas

(Anonymous) 2012-07-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone ever planned out a story in their head, based almost entirely on "wouldn't this be cool", only to realize afterwards that a lot of things could be seen as parallels or metaphors for RL issues and that if interpreted that way your story was actually kind of offensive?

I have a story I've been working on for years and I'm just now realizing how badly a lot of things could be taken out of it.

My friend once wrote a story that was meant to be funny, based on our experiences at one of those interminable "sensitivity training" meetings in high school with four-hour PowerPoint presentations- ours was a comedy of errors from the computer bluescreening at random to the school admin's cell phone going off multiple times, to the cheesy videos the student council came up with... it was supposed to be ironic because the characters in question wouldn't need to go to one of those things anyway.

Well, she posted it online, not thinking anything would come of it. This was before SJWs were really a thing, so it wasn't like she really had any reason to think it would end badly. But it did. People went off on her, accusing her of thinking that sensitivity training was stupid and sexual harassment was funny. Which wasn't the intention at all, but looking back on it now, I can see how it might have come across that way to certain people. I still think it was funny as fuck, but I can see how it could be interpreted wrong.

I wrote a story once that was a little edgy - nothing too graphic or awful. I thought I had warned appropriately for the subject matter. When I posted the first chapter, you would have thought I was advocating the drowning of small animals. I was lambasted from all sides for things I hadn't even written. It was something.

I deleted the story as quickly as I could but that didn't stop some people from commenting, on a completely unrelated story, that I should have never written the one I ended up deleting. I've read far worse from other authors who had gotten far less reaction. I think one of the problems was that most of my stories need toward the light-hearted and this one wasn't in that vein. If someone else had written the story, it probably would have not elicited nearly the reaction. But because it was so far afield of my norm, I was taken to task.

Lesson learned!! Double warn. "Proceed with caution!" But you'll still get haters. That's just how life is.

When I was a freshman in high school my best friend at the time and I collaborated on a comic together about a genderless superhero and his enemy was some kind of supervillain version of Tupac who kidnapped the mayor and held him for ransom. This was not long after Tupac died (a year maybe?) so it was really supposed to be funny because of the whole rumor that he was still alive but in the end it came across as offensive and borderline racist instead. We were trying to make fun of gangsta rap which was really played out and annoying (we felt) at the time but I think people construed it as making fun of black people in general and felt it was racist. I feel really bad about it in hindsight but I WAS only 14... what's worse is that I actually xeroxed this and "published" it, hopefully nobody still has a copy though

I started planning an original story about a young woman who killed herself who falls into heroic adventures in the afterlife. And then I realized how problematic my life/death/afterlife/reincarnation cycle was... IDEK how to fix it so it's drawerfic.

yes, Jesus. I tried my hand at a webcomic for the first time in years, and before I even had a chance, it was torn apart by SJWs. I just gave up. Not even worth it.
