To be fair... it was Tom's jumping the couch about Katie that got people thinking "hmmm, either this guy's not right in the head or there's something really wrong with that Scientology thing he's mixed up with".

What is it with people's obsession with the couch thing? Dude got excited and jumped on a couch. There's really nothing wrong with jumping on a couch. There are a shitload of things wrong with Scientology, but standing on furniture in public is not one of them.

The couch jumping is a shortcut reference to the fact that Tom Cruise is fucking batshit insane.

It was all so obviously a set up. He'd been trying to find a woman to marry to liven his career for a while, and had tried a couple of more famous ones who backed out pretty quickly. When he finally had something to get a bit of publicity he tried this couch jumping and it backfired badly, he sacked his manager because it had been her idea. (I think it may even have been his sister or another relative managing him at the time. ) It was just so fake that it made the cringing even worse.
