In the movies he was never particularly implied to have a dislike of monogamous, long-term relationships. Perfectly normal people can go years between having SOs too, and it's not unusual for them to have one night stands or short-term partners in the meantime. Granted, most people don't have his money, influence, money, reputation, looks, charm, and money, but it's not unusual for them to find someone to take home either.
Reason two: Tony isn't particularly bothered by dry spells. Despite the slight innuendo in the car when he's back in the states, he doesn't sleep with anyone the entire time he's building the Mark II. He also doesn't sleep with anyone for the entirety of the second film, making Rhodey the only person to have seen the poison in his chest.
Reason three: In the comics, at least, he's implied to be a serial monogamist. Whenever he finds someone he considers worth that much of his time, he's utterly faithful. However, as a genius and billionaire, I don't think he finds many people he does consider worthy of a great deal of time. This is just my interpretation of the character, but it looks to me like Tony's abrasiveness is just a way to convince people that need him to get to the point and people that don't need him for something to **** off. As someone who was able to fit a full factor tree in one line and write in scientific notation in elementary school to keep others from stealing my work, I can sympathize. At that time, the only people who wanted to talk to me wanted something, and I enjoyed stringing them along and making them dance for what they wanted. Childish, but I was only 12. And everyone's too 'cool' as a teenager to hang out with the kid 3-4 years younger, so by the time he was old enough to be appealing as an adult and not jailbait, I think he scared off all the interesting and nice people in his social group. So it's not, in my view, that he particularly doesn't *want* a serious relationship, just that he may never have wanted one with anyone he knew or thought about it overmuch.
Reason four: He values Pepper too much, as a person, a friend, and an employee, to cheat on. He's not going to risk her for something he can get by himself, in his room. Or anywhere, really, it's his house.
Reason five: He's smart enough to have thought of this before he started anything with her. He didn't just wake up one morning and think 'hey, know what I should do today? I should totes sleep with Pepper! That's a good idea!'. I'm not saying that he'd have composed lists or ruminated deeply, but he'd have thought first. I don't think he's a very 'ready, fire, aim' person. He only doesn't care about things he doesn't care about. Like Vegas. Or trophies. Or flings. He thought out, at least to a certain extent, the armour, his first flight, Gulmira, getting Pepper's help, his new life mission, the repercussions of Stane's betrayal, and (in IM2) the pros and cons of taking himself out quick vs. a slow, painful, humiliating death (lots of people see lingering illnesses that way. I'm not advocating, just presenting it as a valid stance and one I consider likely based on his character. He's never done well with loss of control).
... Well. That got wordy quick. Feel free to rebut, I keep thinking of getting a dreamwidth just to debate on this site with.
