It's a difference in labeling for those who read non consensual sex fic. Non-con is much less specific, it can mean anything from snuggling with an unwilling partner all the way up to penetration, but in general is used in in a lighter, more erotic sense rather than a deep, visceral angsty sense. Rape is usually reserved for more realistic, painful-to-read, angsty non-con.

And it's a useful distinction for those of us who enjoy non-con fic. Some of us are just in it for the light erotic no-no-yes kink. Some of us like the drama and horror of rape. But even those who like both want to know which we should be expecting. It's a very different experience depending on which one it is.

For those who like neither, or have objections to both, it doesn't matter. They aren't going to read it regardless of how it's labeled. Non-con is as good as rape to ward them away. For them there is no difference, but they are neither the potential audience nor the writer, so it's kind of moot what they want.

It's pretty clear that a lot of people who don't have a non-con kink don't understand the distinction (or why there is one). Since they don't read any non-con, they don't realize there's a spectrum with near vanilla on one end to bondage dungeon with torture on the other. When I see rape being warned, I know to gear myself up for the torture end of the spectrum.

(tbh, I thought you were one of those people who were going to scream "it should always be labeled rape always, always, because rape culture bad. Disrespectful! Trigger!")

Nah, I mean. Maybe if it was real life and somebody was saying, "THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RAPE AND NON-CONSENSUAL SEX! ONE IS WORSE THAN THE OTHER!!!1", but it's fanfiction. I understand that the distinction makes sense online in terms of fanfic for people who read it (and also for people who it may trigger). So, it's a good thing, imo.
