IMDb says it's in development, but that could mean a lot of things. However, movie studios have been known to option things before they're published (or sometimes even before something is finished being written). Anyway, there can be a pretty fast turn around for a project that a studio is enthusiastic about.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about a Night Circus movie. It would have to work really hard to capture the magic the story has but by god I would probably love it. Because I am so in love with this book.
But yeah, I wouldn't put much stock in the rumor

I'm just gonna go ahead and ask what's this book about. Because I've seen it around and would actually like to buy it.

A girl and a boy are raised by magicians with one purpose in mind: to compete in a contest where they don't know the rules. The stage for this contest is the night circus, a mysterious circus that only becomes more so as the contestants pile on magic, with no idea what the other is doing or even if they are doing the right thing. And quitting is not an option.

Oooh this sounds pretty interesting! I'm gonna pick it up, thanks anon!

I don't know this one but I've seen so many movies for video games or books dropped. So because of experience I would say not to get your hopes up too high. D:

Maybe it'll work out though - you never know! *crosses fingers*

As someone who works for Erin's publisher, I can tell you that it's more than just a rumour. It's just in its planning stages now, but the head of our films department, who has a hand whenever one of our books gets turned into a movie, has been focusing a lot on it in the last week alone.

This book already felt like a flat novelization of an excellent movie, so here's to hoping the movie is excellent.

LOL agreed. It was like the cliff's notes of a movie really.

Even though I almost exclusively prefer live-action movies, I hesitate with this one, and wonder if it might not be the best fit... I really liked the book's atmosphere's sense of being a bit distant from regular reality, I'd worry about the movie not catching that right. If it's good, though, I'd love to see it.
(I've never had trouble forming a clear image of Tsukiko though! idk, maybe it's because i'm really familiar with contortion, but...)

The plot fell flat for me but the circus sounded gorgeous, so I'm glad there's going to be a movie. I only read it for the pretty stuff and I bet I'll see the movie for the pretty stuff too.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's too many characters, and too much time skipping for this to work as a movie. They'd have to cut a lot of stuff.

It is going to be a movie though. When it came out, there was a huge announcement about it (It was a NaNoWriMo book, so it's been around a while) I still remember seeing it in the Boston Metro, lol.

The only characters I'd be interested in seeing are the Twins/Bailey. Even though the twins are pretty much Mary/Gary sues. I reallyyyyy did not like the solution/ending, so I don't know if I'd go watch it...

[The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern]

I've heard that there's going to be a movie based on this book next year. I'm very skeptical. It seems too soon to be more than a rumor, and I really think that the special effects team would be hard pressed to make it as magnificent as it has to be.

But despite my skepticism about this project's existance and potential to be even decent, I still want to see it. Even if it turns out to be a train-wreck.

Because it would finally give me a clear mental image of Tsukiko, the contortionist.

It wasn't completely amazing (it sort of felt like that she had amazing ideas that I was interested in but they were skimmed to fit in one after another, if that makes sense) but I still enjoyed it. I hope the movie turns out well.
