Welp, I've always loved the idea of going to comic-con (despite the horrible anxiety I'm sure I would feel being surrounded by so many people if it were to actually happen) but working there? Sounds like hell on earth to me.

I love cons, and I've always liked the idea of going to Comic-Con and DragonCon, but I know myself well enough and what con problems are like on a small scale, that I can't really envision having just a whole lot of fun at either of those behemoths.

I understand that completely. In theory it looks like a crazy amount of fun, but the actuality might be quite different.

I went to WorldCon once....

...when it was close enough to where I was living I could attend without paying the swish hotel it was in thousands of dollars for the, like, two hours I laid my head down.

Since I really don't travel, I knew it was probably going to be a first-and-last-time deal for me. Which it was. Am I glad I went? Yeah, absolutely, it gave me a real sense of what the FANAC archive contains, up close and personal. Would I do it again? Meh. I definitely would not travel to go to WorldCon. In fact, I'm not even sure I would attend, were it held close to me again.

When I moved to my currently very rural location I made mental plans to go back and attend the quite-popular local con that I went to just about every year (which was always great fun)...but that was six years ago, and I haven't even been back to that city's AIRPORT since.

TL;DR anon has well and truly gafiated and doesn't know how to feel about it.

That said, if you have the chance to attend one of the big conventions at least once in your life, do it; you may luck out like I did and find both cool people to hang out with, and info on a smaller local con that won't break your bank to attend.

I don't travel either. Not that I wouldn't be interested, but I don't really have the money to do so. (And the idea of spending thousands of dollars on any hotel is staggering for me, so it's nice you found a way around that.)

I think what you're saying is that the experience is a unique one and that it's worth the memories even it's not something you choose to do more than once? You're probably right about that!

And plans fall through, I know. Interests change too. What might've been appealing and important to you at one time might not be at another. It happens. :/ Maybe you'll want to go back one day, but even if not you can still experience fandom through the internet; it might not be the same, but hey, whatever makes you happy!
