In fairness, Donna was essentially regressed back to who/what she was before she met the Doctor--which was a woman about to get married. Had she not had that stupid memory erase bullshit happen I might agree, but hat's what happened,

Though, honestly, why is the idea that Donna's getting married so bad (or Martha's, since you mentioned it)? And why does it have to be "replacing the Doctor"? Maybe she [gasp] met a guy she likes. And last I checked, women can be married and still have, like, careers and full lives and stuff. My sisters are married and I don't think of them as "dependent" in ANY way to... fucking ANYONE, actually.

It's weird how many people don't seem to understand that the point of a romantic relationship for a lot of people has nothing to do with not being independent. I remember telling my mother in my teens that my definition of needing to get married (or living with someone) was that my life would be better with the man in it than without him. At almost 40, I'm still single because that hasn't happened, and I'm not unhappy. And if it does still happen, that would be fine, too. But there's no reason I couldn't still be awesomely independent at the same time, IMO.
