Yeah, fans can be really mean. Which is odd, seeing how we should all probably know better after getting picked on in school so much.

Some of the most bitter peole I've known have been what other people would call "nerds" - involved in fandom, or anime, or comics.
To the outside, there's this image of "misfits banding together".
But on the inside, it's as though because a lot of them got bullied and harassed during school, they want to take that power back by turning on each other.
