There we go!

And now for a bit of a change- I normally feature a lot of jumping spiders that are all fuzzy and big eyed, but not all jumping spiders look like that, actually! Here's a few that don't look like jumpers at all (but definitely count as them).

Did you know that there are a lot of species of spiders that actually immitate ants? Here's the wiki page on it! It's really fascinating, actually- some of them mimic only the behaviour of ants and not what they look like, while other spiders mimic different species of ants depending on whether theyh're male or female. Still others mimic one type of ant when they're young, but a different one when they're older. The few pictures I've posted hardly scratch the surface. Spiders are pretty impressive, aren't they?

Winnie the Pooh! This pleases my inner child.

Is it weird that I think that spider is gorgeous? Then again, I've always found ants rather cute.

Also: OMG, ARE THE PIGS THERE BECAUSE OF CHARLOTTE'S WEB?! FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD BOOK EVER. :D

Same anon as above: Oh fuck, it's Winnie the Pooh, not Charlotte's Web. I feel like such a dumbass now.

Still, Winnie the Pooh is cool too!

It is pooh, yes! Charlotte's Web was a favourite of mine as a child, too. Here are some pics of Araneus cavaticus spiders and pigs for you anyway. The spiders might look fairly plain compared to more colourful orb weavers or jumpers, but I think there's a pretty sort of grace to them.

When I realized that this was a Winnie the Pooh thread, I got very happy inside.

Tigger ftw!

If ever there is a tomorrow when we're not together, there is something you must always remember: You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

This is a very silly thing to say, perhaps, but I just wanted to randomly thank you for posting the spider pics every day. I am AMAZINGLY terrified of spiders (like, the tiniest ones can make me scream like a sorority girl in a slasher flick) but I try to look at your posts every day, and I feel like I'm learning something, little by little, about these things that terrify me so.

XD I'm still completely terrified, but at least I think they're cool AND scary now.

And also, that second donkey is the fluffiest donkey ever and I want one. :( But my fiance says we can't keep it in the closet.

You'd probably get along with my brother-in-law. My sister's put her foot down on him getting a polar bear, even though he promised to keep it in the bathtub ;)

Aw, no, thank you! People like you are why I'm doing posts like these, and why it all started in the first place. It's ok to find spiders scary- they certainly can be kind of unexpected, can't they? But even so, learning about them or seeing how they work and live, I think that's interesting. It's always helped me to remember that most spiders are probably way more scared of me than I am of them. Even for the spiders that are dangerous- here is a video for you! Watch it all through- keep in mind what this guy is doing- that is, handling a Brown Recluse and a Black Widow- is extremely risky and you really should never try this, but he's definitely very informative and knows what he's talking about (even if he is kind of nuts). Both spiders just seem to be going 'aaaa water ??? aaa water everywhere herp' more than anything else.

Ah, I tried, but could only get about halfway in. Did get far enough to see the black widow be completely confused when the brown recluse just steamrolled over it to get to higher ground. I didn't brown recluses were so small.

[personal profile] joltymcjolterson 2012-07-25 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
Neither of them are very big. Most brown recluse bites don't actually do much, either. They can be harmful, but often aren't- still, if you see any around, those are spiders that you would be better off avoiding.

Honestly though, that was awesome! Think about it this way, you're a person who said that they're amazingly terrified of spiders and screams at them, and you just sat through more than a minute looking at two of the most dangerous spiders in the world instead of immediately closing the tab or something. That's a fantastic attempt, and more than a lot of people in your position would be willing to do. Massive props to you, and here is a picture of a fluffy donkey for that.

OMG POOH

Marsupials are amazing, truly - I'd love it if you had a marsupial day sometime.
