Can you say why you think they're worse? I am pretty damn fussy and while I love Pterry it's no point of personal pride to me to insist that Alzheimer's wouldn't affect a person's writing ability. If I thought the quality was dropping I think I would notice and feel disappointed about it. But I honestly thought Snuff and Unseen Academicals were great. Haven't read Nation but it's been recced to me multiple times.

What are your fave Discworld books? Maybe you're one of those who thought the first few were the best and it's all been downhill from there..?

Not OP

I haven't finished Snuff yet and I enjoyed Unseen Academicals fine. My favourites of the series have been the Guards trilogy, Night Watch (but that might be because I'm a sucker for Les Mis), Thud! and The Truth.
From what I have read of Snuff, and I'm not that far through, the writing style seems pretty different, the humour not as subtle as other books and the scenes choppy and abrupt. It's almost as if the book is trying to rub the jokes in my face like LOOK THIS IS FUNNY whereas other titles just made me laugh seemingly without trying.

TBH I'm finding it hard to get through Snuff. I keep having to put it down.

TL;DR: Vimes/Vetinari narrative requires a degree of subtlety to work and anon thinks that Snuff has lost that and is too heavy-handed for a Pratchett book.

Seconding the above anon. I honestly thought Vetinari went off into Author Tract territory in Snuff and near the end of Unseen Academicals. Vimes sounded a lot more talkative and borderline preachy in Snuff, and I thought [SPOILER ALERT] his reliance on the Summoning Dark to figure out what was going on was really OOC.

I enjoyed Nation,, though, and I'll probably read The Long Earth at some point...

For the record, my favorite Discworld books are Night Watch and Going Postal, so I actually think his middle-to-later books are the best.

I haven't read anything recent of his so I don't know if this applies yet, but...

YES, Alzheimer's affects a person's ability to write - and speak, and read, and all other forms of communication. That's one of the symptoms. It's steadily worsening dementia - cognitive impairment.

Of course Pterry's writing ability is going to decline; Alzheimer's means he is slowly losing the ability to think and remember.

i.e. you seem to be arguing against a statement that was specifically disclaimed

I can't comment on his later books, seeing as I haven't read them yet, but...Yes. Alzheimer's *would* affect someone's writing ability - and I say this as someone whose had to see family members go through it. It effects not just your ability to communicate [which would impact you're ability to write], but also your memory...which is another important thing when writing a novel. Sure, for a while you can get by with writing things down/having other people remind you...but it's going to get to the point where even that doesn't help, and you'd still have to remember to read what you've written [which can be an issue for some people even without Alzheimer's.]

I liked Snuff but thought he was getting a bit too sentimental in his treatment of Vimes. Too much happy Vimes means not enough tension. The character works best when he's pacing the streets and growling at the Watch in frustration.

That's funny, Unseen Academicals and Snuff are two of my least favorites. I just finished Snuff and I honestly kind of hated it. I get why it was this way from an emotional perspective, but the entire thing was basically a paean to how super cool Vimes is and how super cool the people he likes are and it just rubbed me entirely the wrong way.

My absolute favorites, I would have to say, are Reaper Man, Thief of Time, Men at Arms, and Maskerade, so it's not like I'm married to the earlier books. I just like the ones best where there's a good balance of conflict and badassery/humor and pathos.

another anon

I thought his best books were around the time of Lords and Ladies and Feet of Clay and Small Gods -- those were jump-up-and-cheer books. I think most of the ones since then have been steadily more boring ... even Going Postal and such.
