OMG I was indoctrinated (not introduced, but definitely fell in love) into the MU through the Fantastic Four too! I actually got into comics big-time in 2008, after watching The Dark Knight and Iron Man (I had only really read Spider-Man and Superman before that), but I stayed with older comics because I had heard a LOT of bitching about modern comics and their bleakness and grimness from some fandom friends. And yeah, I ate up the Lee/Kirby and Byrne runs on the FF like candy, and just omg...I love many, many characters and teams in the MU, but the FF is pure distilled Marvelness, if you know what I mean. Then I migrated to The Avengers and the X-Men and after reading a couple of their biggest stories, I read Avengers Forever, which is basically a giant goopy squeeful love letter to the MU), and went on from there because that book mentioned so many awesome events I was like "omg I HAVE to read all of these things!!".

And then after a while I was eventually so in love I was like "pfft, like I can't handle one dumb story...I handled DC's Identity Crisis just fine!" and...well, instead I wound up more enraged than any fictional thing had caused me to become before. So, my Fantastic Four love and Avengers love plus the fact that I adored the shit out of Tony Stark after watching the aforementioned movie and adored the comicsverse version and the epic havoc that was his life (a good part of which was caused by his running in circles like a hamster protecting the Avengers) even more, I was going, in order of importance 1) OMG WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY BEEEEEEAAAAUUUTIFUL SUPERHERO COMMUNITY? 2) OMG HOW DARE YOU DO THAT TO TONY STARK? and 3) OMG HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY DO THAT TO REED RICHARDS?? But ugh, I'm kind of disappointed that everyone focuses solely on how badly Tony was fucked up, when Reed was fucked up almost as badly as Tony was. I've even seen people blame Reed for the more batshit-insane (read: Cloned Thor) stuff that the pro-reg side did in Civil War and I'm like "no, fuck you, Reed would never do that either! He's a super-genius! Also, he's good! Also, entire planets full of aliens run screaming at the sound of his name and he would never feel he had no choice in the matter!" There's a really skeevy undercurrent of anti-intellectualism to Civil War, now that I think of it...

I have a few pet antidotes to CW though: 1) headcanon: we've actually been reading about a horrible parallel universe since around 2003 that accidentally got switched with 616 because Franklin Richards or some other semi-omnipotent being was in a bad mood one day and wished everyone would just go to hell and accidentally made it happen 2) Fantastic Four #336 from the '90s, which I will always treasure as The Story In Which The Real Reed Richards Spends An Entire Issue Telling Congress That Registration Is Dumb And They Should Feel Dumb For Thinking Of It While The Fantastic Four Casually Beat Up Supervillains In The Hallway Behind Him and 3) Mightygodking's erase-and-rewrite-the-word-balloons parody "I Don't Need Your Civil War", which literally brought me to tears with laughter.

It seems that our experiences have been quite similar! This is how it went for me:

6-year-old me, watching reruns of the Fantastic Four cartoon: OMG OMG OMG THIS SHOW IS SO AWESOME THESE COOL PEOPLE HAVE COOL POWERS AND COOL OUTFITS AND ARE BEATING UP BAD GUYS INCLUDING DOCTOR DOOM WHO IS THE COOLEST VILLAIN EVER BECAUSE HE HAS A COOL MASK WHICH MAKES HIM LOOK BADASS I LOVE EVERYTHING HERE SOOOOOO MUCH! I'M GOING TO GO TO THE LIBRARY AND GET A BUNCH OF THOSE OLD COMICS SO I CAN HAVE MORE FANTASTIC FOUR!!!
13-year-old me, watching the Iron Man movie: Hey, this is kind of awesome. I should start reading comics again!
13-year-old me, reading modern Marvel comics: Wait what why is everything angsty and GRIMDARK and why does everyone hate each other and why is Iron Man a fascist prick even though he was so cool in the movie what is this I don't even.

I guess I should have known what I was getting into, since I was aware of the sort of ridiculousness that went on in comics during the 90s (a.k.a. GRITTED TEETH AND POUCHES AND MORE POUCHES), but it's still kind of a shock when your knowledge of superhero comics comes mostly from vague memories of reading 1960s Fantastic Four as a 6-year-old. And yeah, Reed is kind of a jerk sometimes, but that doesn't change the fact that Civil War seriously fucked with his characterization for the sake of DRAMA. There is definitely an undercurrent of anti-intellectualism there; just look at the characters on the pro-bullshit side: Tony, Reed, Hank Pym (even though he turned out to be a Skrull), Spider-Man (before he switched sides). All science-y genius type guys. The moral here is very clear: SMART PEOPLE ARE EVIL AND WANT TO TAKE AWAY EVERYONE'S LIBERTY.

Anyway, your pet antidotes are wonderful and I am now going to adopt "it's just Franklin Richards messing everything up" as part of my headcanon. But I still like my old theory that all the characters behaving wildly OOC were replaced by Anal Skrulls. Secret Invasion makes it semi-canon, right?

Dude, I seriously do not fucking get why they didn't go "LOL PSYCH THEY WERE ACTUALLY ALL SKRULLS!" during Secret Invasion to explain Civil War (and One More Day. Holy mother of GOD I have no words to describe my disgust with One More Day). It would have been a massive cop-out yes, but it at least would have meant that that gorgeous intricate amazing world that had been painstakingly built up since 1961 would have remained intact. And it still would have been meaningful and dramatic — didn't the Skrulls actually believe that they were the people they were impersonating? (I might be confused here though — I never did manage to get through Secret Invasion before chucking it back to the person I borrowed it from and on the entire company in disgust). So there could have been drama and angst and "oh my god would I be actually capable of that? I have got to make sure I never become a monster like Skrull!Me by staying up all night and being miserable and paranoid and self-loathing!" existential manpain going on (and hey, Tony, Reed, Peter, and Hank ALL have gigantic guilt complexes too! It would have been perfect!)

And I hate the "this guy is a jerk so therefore he's capable of any horrible shit we want him to do!" bullshit excuse. Yeah, Reed is a jerk. So is Tony. That means their demeanor can be abrasive and they have a lot of personal failings and sometimes when they're really pushed they do things that are kind of "dude, seriously, that's not cool." Like, you know, invading Latveria without explaining what they're doing to their wife and friends, or beating up people who try to stop them from beating up people who may have stolen their tech. It does NOT mean they're heartless or immoral or incapable of caring about things like civil rights and dignity and loyalty and friendship and human decency and freedom and moral principles. Character derailment is pretty much my bullet-proof "nope" button. No matter how good a story is, I will not enjoy it if it ruins characters in the process.

On the subject of Fantastic Four squeeing (because I know very few other fans of the team): The Doctor Doom/Reed Richards relationship is very possibly my single favorite dynamic in all of superhero-comics-dom. I could ramble about it's epicness for pages :D

Oh fuck, do not even get me STARTED on the travesty that is One More Day. That was pretty much the point where I went "OK, NO. Just NO. FUCK THIS. I refuse to read anything post-Civil War until Marvel retcons this shit into oblivion. FUCK ONE MORE DAY. FUCK MARVEL. FUCK EVERYTHING." There are so many things wrong with it, I could write a whole fucking essay.

So with you on the character derailment, too. Of course the way superhero comics work means that characters can be interpreted tons of ways, but when it gets to the point where they can barely even be called heroes anymore? That's going too far. This is one way of the many things that I think the movieverse is currently doing better than the comics. Like, the Iron Man movie? All about Tony Stark getting over his dickishness and being like, "HEY, having morals is GOOD! I can be a hero instead of a selfish asshole!" Thor's movie? Quite different, but really all boils down to "Thor learns to stop being an irresponsible dick, and saving the day is pretty cool too!" I don't remember Secret Invasion very well either, but it was such a missed opportunity it's almost tragic. Retcon that fixes character derailment + possible character development = Everything is good again! But that's never going to happen. Unless we get a massive reboot like DC, the taint of Civil War will probably never completely go away.

Lastly, Doctor Doom is one of my favourite comic book villains ever and if you (or anyone, really) rambled for pages about him and Reed I would read every single word over and over again until my eyes hurt. It's the best hero/villain dynamic since Superman and Lex Luthor. Plus, it's always fun when Doom says stuff like "Blah blah blah, I am so GLORIOUS and my MAGNIFICENT plan would have worked out STUPENDOUSLY were it not for that accursed RICHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARDS!"

tl;dr: Doctor Doom is FABULOUS and many other adjectives as well.

I kind of hate that the Marvel Movie Universe is so much better than the comics are currently, because I loved the comicsverse damnit :( But yeah, characterization-wise the movies have been leagues above the comics for years and while that makes me sad it makes sense given the far higher caliber of writers and the far less insulated and niche quality of the audience and the far more compressed timeframe. And at the moment, I have ceased to care. I have been in a blissed-out daze of utter gluttonous joy since The Avengers came out and I will be perfectly happy to never rise from it again :D

+237874638764 re: everything you said about Doom. Have you seen Doctor Doom's TvTropes page? It's written all in Doom's voice from Doom's POV and is full of Doom going "LIES! DOOM IS NOT THIS TROPE! THIS IS OBVIOUSLY VILE SLANDER SPREAD BY THAT ACCURSED RICHAAAAAAAAAARRRRDS!!!" And how he blames Reed for everything. And is so serious about blaming Reed for everything. And his motivations for hating Reed are all so nice and concentrated into that one single incident, yet have so many complex facets and layers and implications and he's just so much fun and so utterly ridiculous and over the top and his speech and behavior is so many gazillion miles past the line where hamminess begins, yet he's always badass and powerful and intelligent enough that you have to take him seriously. Supes/Luthor is the only hero/villain dynamic that comes close to the pure epic that is Reed and Doom. And he's epic pretty much every time he appears — I've lost count of his most awesome moments of awesomesauce. Although I also have to make special mention of the epicness of his sheer epic fail in Grant Morrison's Fantastic 1234 miniseries :)

As for One More Day, I like to just listen to Linkara rage and rant and fume about it because he does it so much better than I do. I generally start spluttering incoherently and then bury myself in a docs folder filled with panels of Mary Jane Watson being perfect that I collected specifically for that purpose. But yeah, totally agree. It was basically the equivalent of taking a giant dump on top of the Marvel Universe after destroying it during Civil War and other prior idiocy, and then running away laughing.

(btw, I don't want to ask you to de-anon, but if you have an lj or dw account I'd love it if you dropped a PM in my inbox so I could friend you ;))

Hee! Linkara is awesome at ranting, it's why I like his vids so much.

I've actually seen people say that they want the movieverse to end with Civil War. I just...there are no words. Ugh. I mean, first of all it wouldn't even work because there are only a few superheroes and they're all on file with SHIELD/don't have a secret identity, but why on earth would anyone actually want that to happen? It boggles the mind...

FFFFF OMG I WAS STARTING TO THINK I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO WAS PISSED THAT TVTROPES WERE CHANGING ALL THEIR COOL NAMES TO BORING ONES!!!! And I think my favorite thing about Doom is that the main reason he's a villain is that he wants to take over the world so that he can gloat to Reed about how he's smarter/cooler/more powerful than him. I'm pretty sure there have been several instances where he could have killed Reed but didn't because he needed toshow Reed how fucked he was and how there was no escape from or hope to defeat DOOM! And Reed goes "how is this even my life" and then again asks Doom to please stop being evil. BUT HE CAN'T. Because Doom is evil right down to the pettiest little petty details. :D Seriously, I will never understand how Marvel writers looked at decades of superheroes struggling against enormous odds and using stuff like creativity and resilience and teamwork and ingenuity to defeat villains as ridiculously overblown and melodramatic yet dangerous and surrounded by sheer awesome technology-porn as Doom, and decided that that no, that was boring and lame, and they should be fighting each other instead. What.
