Ten years ago, most readers in most fandoms actually commented/reviewed when they liked what they read. In recent years - for whatever reason - most readers will just gobble up your goodies without so much as a belch afterwards. (A lot even seem to feel as though they are doing you a HUGE favor if they take 2 or 3 seconds to click the Kudo/Favorite link.)

So again - congratulations on your commentage. Cherish those comments, but be careful to treat them as unexpected windfalls rather than an IV drip for your self-esteem.

That was when an FFN favourites list was limited to 30 items, you couldn't see how many hits your FFN fics had without paying for a membership (so few people knew what their hits-to-comments ratio was), and LJ was still invite-only, so responding by review or email was the only way to acknowledge an author at all. And that's assuming you're talking about after FFN opened rather than before. Fic was much more of a walled garden then.

Large fandoms still seem pretty good at delivering comments, but yeah, validating though they are they're not an IV drip and it's good to value your writing for its own sake as well as for its capacity to make people happy.
