I read the book during a phase of "I should read this book because it's famous" and at the end all I could say was, "Um...ok...?"

That was pretty much my thought exactly. And then when I found out more about their private lives (particularly Burroughs), I was just disgusted.

Now Gregory Corso I love and Denise Levertov and some of the more tangentially connected writers, but Kerouc and co? Not so much.

I had to read it for a class, and I was just left wondering why the fuck everyone loves this book. I understand that it was hugely influential on road novels/films, but the way some people hero worship Dean, who was an abusive misogynistic bastard... and Sal, who fetishized poor minorities and also laughed off abuse... and they all treated women like used tissues... yeah. Nope. I was really glad that the prof who made us read it actually hated it and went on a rant about the misogyny in it.

I would have appreciated a short story version. Capture the tone and the characters' lifestyles and let a couple hundred pages go.
