Christ, that sucks. Lotta reader entitlement there.

I didn't get into the LOTR fandom because no one wrote what I wanted to read. There just wasn't very much fic that wasn't very samey (and elf-ridden, elves are boring). An independent writer like the OP (though not that pairing, I don't do RPF) would have been a welcome breath of fresh air. I guess if there was this attitude that everyone has to write the same things, that will stifle creativity.

But seriously, fuck the BNFs. They can write what they like and read what they like, but they don't get to dictate what other people write and read. I really wish people wouldn't give them that power.

Nod, nod, nod. I don't think the greedies in LOTR fully understand the role they played in the fandom's dying out. There is such a thing as someone being too whiny, or someone in desperate need of a beta trying to claim "It's so exclusive, no one is reading my fic!" but in the end, it came down to who you know rather than how talented you were. Looking back to when I first started writing LOTR, I know a lot of my stories had a newbish, sophomoric and inexperienced quality. They weren't crap, but nothing you'd die to publish. The other problem I had was that I was into the hobbit-angle, and I liked making less-serious, crackish stories. So it didn't matter if the writing had been impeccable, as the fandom was very picky and unappreciative of any story that didn't follow whatever unspoken guidelines there were.

We all play a part in the end. The important thing to do is find your niche, and I have, so.... yep! :-D
