If I remember correctly, there were still a lot of third class mothers and their kids loading into that boat and he didn't want to take the seat of a woman or child while any still remained on board. Same sentiment shared by a lot of men on the ship, regardless of class.

Ironically more first class men survived than 3rd class women or children, iirc. So I'm not so sure how many people actually shared the sentiment beyond lip service.
