LOL I've never taken any marketing classes, but I tend to notice product placements in movies, especially big films like "The Avengers". In fact, I watched it for the third time earlier today and I still recall thinking, amongst all the chaos, "Yep, you see that car right there? Gotta make sure we see that it's an Acura! And look! Citibank is still over there! Aww, look at that Dr. Pepper truck get blown up! Oh, there's Farmers Insurance in the background, reminding us that even in an alien invasion, they still have your back." I have fun looking out for product placements, though.

Interesting! Are most of the product placements meant to be kinda subliminal, or have most people just sort of learned to ignore it to the point of not even realizing it's there? I mean, aside from blatant car shills on Bones and Vampire Diaries, I've never noticed much myself.

LOL the product placement in TVD is hilarious! They have new phones in every episode and say "I Bing-ed it" unironically. I've noticed the car placement on Fringe, too.

The Amazing Spiderman also had Peter use Bing! Really now...

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
After the movie, my brother said, "You know, for a genius, Peter's pretty stupid to use Bing. They just take shit from Google anyway," and I replied with, "Hahaha Sony won't allow Peter to use Google."

that scene was so long and awkward

Sweet Jesus -- my friends and I tried to make the car product placements (I think it's Nissan) on "Fringe" into a drinking game. It ended rather badly after four weeks.

I notice it, too. Luckily, it amuses me more than it bothers. On a side note, I really like those logos.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor you, OP. I never notice product placement, but then, I've never taken marketing classes; I imagine it's hard to concentrate on awesome battle scenes with Coke ads flying everywhere or whatever.

Sometimes I notice them, sometimes I don't; thankfully it's never ruined a movie for me. Poor you, OP!

LOL, I totally notice that a lot. Saw Spiderman recently and the product placement was so noticeable (Peter Parker uses Bing...??). You're not alone.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not bothered by product placement.
What bothers me is whoever I'm watching the movie with leaning over to whisper about how they totally saw that, did you see that, look at the product placement, so shameful, aren't they clever for noticing it?

In most cases product placement isn't supposed to be obvious, it tries to make using the product look like the normal thing to do even when it isn't, like using Bing.

I love Tiger & Bunny, but Pepsi Nex is a godawful drink and makes me think less of the character on the show who advertises it.

After going to film school; I just can't look at films normally. Including the product placement.

In most movies, I'm able to ignore it, but my notes for "Avengers" included, "Did Tony just land on the corner of product placement" followed by a list of things he'd crashed in to.

I notice but it doesn't bother me unless I feel like it's being shoved down my throat (like Bing in Spiderman). Also when the truck with Oshkosh shows up in TDKR I laughed out loud... because I work with toddlers and the only thing I connect to the word Oshkosh is adorable clothing.

It's everywhere in primetime TV now, too. Kinda hard not to notice when it's shoved in your face ("I need to search your Prius" "Bing it!") but I just roll my eyes and get on with the show.

It was really, really bad in the Transformers franchise... What with the cars and then things like the Mountain Dew soda machine turning into a transformer and launching cans of Dew everywhere...

I usually don't notice product placement so much, but that entire move was 'here lookit'

Am I the only one who has almost always noticed product placement in movies? To me, it's been glaringly obvious ever since I can remember...

I adored the product placement in The Avengers, because they seemed too obvious to me to be really sinister. Like, there's Iron Man falling out of the sky! Right next to a Southwest Airlines ad! How whimsical! But I didn't go out and book a flight to Albuquerque afterwards.

I remember back in the 90s there was big hub bub over Seinfeld using Snapple prolifically in their episodes. Everyone thought it was a product placement, but really, it was because Jerry Seinfeld liked drinking Snapple so he believed his character liked drinking Snapple. So, without really putting business into it, he drank Snapple on-air. Same thing with the magnet of Superman on Jerry's fridge: DC Comics didn't okay that or pay for that, Seinfeld's just a huge Superman fan.

Me too, OP.
I never take any marketing classes, it's just a weird hobby of mine to find which brand companies have thrown their money for an ad in a movie.
It didn't ruin anything though, usually I just go, aha found you!
Sometimes I laugh it off when it's too blatant :)
