there's nothing elitist about not wanting to be annoyed by someone's immature rambling at you tbh

[personal profile] multifangeek 2012-07-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it really immature rambling or just a fan wanting to find someone else to discuss their fandoms with?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-27 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"babble at random people" kind of sounds like she's just going on at anyone who will listen, whether they're even interested in her fandom or not. the "no1curr, learn to take a hint" part also made me think that people are annoyed by her and she just doesn't get that.

[personal profile] multifangeek 2012-07-27 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops, I misread the "no1curr" part - OP is talking about the classmate not herself there, right? Understood and I get that it can be annoying...

Still... having been on the other side of that it might be possible the classmate is just looking for someone to talk to about her favorite stuff and just doesn't have the social skills yet to realize how annoying they're being.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-27 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
ia on the lack of social skills part. that was my first thought too. i agree the classmate kind of comes off as oblivious, not really realising what she's doing wrong.

so i think it's probably not the classmate's fault she bothers people, but i don't think the OP is elitist for not wanting to get mixed up in that.

[personal profile] multifangeek 2012-07-28 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... I admit I agree - OP isn't really elitist.

I had this same problem with a coworker last year...she went on and on about Dr Who and her other fandoms and I just kept shtum because I didn't feel it was appropriate to talk about fandom with people I worked with. I never let her know how involved in fandom I was. If she'd wanted someone to talk to about that side of her life, she should have only mentioned it when we met up outside work; if she had, she might have got some decent conversation out of me, but because of her poor social skills I decided not to let her know.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
NA

I have a coworker very much like this, except that she knows how involved I am in fannish stuff. She's very casual in mentioning her fandom involvement in the office, and I am terrified that someday she's going to bring me into it somehow because she doesn't seem to understand that I don't want to explain my smutfic to my coworkers. :/
thene: Fang, with her back turned. Fate is not kind to those who leap. (oerba yun fang)

[personal profile] thene 2012-07-28 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god. Should you maybe warn her not to? That is so awkward whatever comes of it, though. :(

I neglected to say in my previous comment - I had two fannish coworkers at that point. The other one was much more discreet, never talked about specific fandoms she was in but only about processes (like, art techniques and stuff) and sites she used, waited months before telling me her dA username when we were on break once (ie. NOT while we were working), and only ever got really fannish-at-work once when we were doing a nightshift together and were therefore the only two people around. I've considered reaching out to her as a fandom friend now I've moved on in life because she handled the whole issue so well and I think I'd trust her not to tell my fandom username to anyone else I know IRL. I definitely wasn't inclined to tell her while we were still working together, even though I knew hers; I do a lot of porn and she doesn't, so.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I've warned her not to, but she's not really a "think before you speak" kind of person.

There's another fangirl in my office as well, who I was close with both online and IRL before she started working there, and we're both very discreet, so it's a pretty sharp contrast. I just can't imagine wanting to try to explain fandom to my non-fannish coworkers. Even if they don't think it's insane, it's still not something they necessarily want to talk or think about.

Anime geeks can be excruciating, and I say this as someone who loves anime and attends all sorts of anime conventions. The obsessive plot summary is the worst, followed closely by the obsessive squeeing over one's own personal headcanon. It's perfectly normal to not want to be the recipient of someone's craziness. Maybe you can be friends with this girl once she chills the fuck out.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-27 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew someone like that, but I made the mistake of telling them yes.

I regretted it so hard omg. I have rl friends that know when to quit about fandoms but this girl didn't.

So I don't think it's elitist to want to avoid that lol.

Your interests are yours to keep private as you please.
Certainly if you feel like being open about them would make you uncomfortable.
Absolutely if that would be down to perceived association with someone who behaves in a way you don't agree with.

Not elitist, just human c:

I think I'm sometimes that annoying person^^" I've gotten better in recent years but I used to sometimes end up probably boring people to death with the latest fandom wank.

Now I only share the really good stuff :P

I think I am too.

I didn't realize how much I was talking about fanfic at work until a co-worker told me that the idea of Harry Potter fanfic was creeping him out and I should stop. (He was a particularly blunt guy.) I felt horrible.

I learned my lesson, or I hope I did.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I used to be that person too. I think I managed to mostly grow out of it and I'm better at socializing now. How embarrassing it is to look back on those times!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely used to be that person when I was in HS and a freshman in college. Ugh!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I knew someone like that in school. Felt obliged to listen to her because I knew she was very lonely and suicidally depressed, but I just ended up tuning out :\

I think it's the other party's responsibility to tell a person they're not interested in whatever the conversation topic is, if they have a problem with it.

Social cues and all that shit, but seriously, I wish people just weren't too pussy to just come out and say "I'm not into that. Please don't discuss it with me."
I don't understand the difficulty.

Unless this has been done, and said persistent fan is just continuing anyway. In that case, I don't blame whoever the hell decides to avoid or ignore them.

Telling someone to basically "shut up" is easier said than done, especially in real life conversation. Some may take the "I'm not into that," as an excuse or reason to explain their fave in more detail. Some people just don't see or get the non verbal "boring" messages. Then there is the whole coming off like a rude jerk when you say something like "don't discuss that with me." So I think most people are going to give a polite smile and nod, just to avoid a potentially more awkward situation.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly--for a lot of people in fandom, it seems that "I'm not into that" is the cue for them to say "But it's so great! I don't see why anyone wouldn't be into that! It's so DEEP and COMPLEX. Only someone who didn't get it could fail to be interested."
