The issue that I have with Irene in Sherlock was not that she was a sex worker, but it was that her story was changed from someone who was running the show the whole time to someone who needed Moriarty's help and who, in the end, needed to be saved by Sherlock.

Agreed. I have many MANY issues with Moffat's portrayal of Irene, but her being a sex worker isn't one of them.

This, basically. When a character comes across better in Victorian-era literature than in modern TV, that's a sad statement.

Yep I MUCH prefer the Irene in the Conan Doyle story. Whilst I didn't care that she was a sex worker, at the same time I find the whole trope really tacky, and it made me cringe that they rolled out the dominatrix cliches. Plus that she had to be naked to challenge Sherlock. IDK it just felt like a really cheap shot.

In the story she is a great character who has her own stuff going on, and Sherlock is a pawn in that, but she's not that interested in him, and he is just intrigued more than anything, I hate that they had to bring it down to sex.
