Except Moffat didn't create Irene Adler. He took a character who, in the source material, was the only woman who had Holmes's respect for completely intellectual reasons and turned her into a character who could only be powerful in the one realm that Holmes wasn't. Then Moffat showed that her apparent sexual power was also worth shit, as she ends in up in a burka at the end, about to be punished for her slutty ways when Holmes rides to the rescue. He turned her from a character who had her own love interest to one who was so wowed by Holmes that despite being a lesbian, she just couldn't resist him. And of course she's working for Moriarty too, because sexual women can't be anything but villainous.

And he specifically wrote Sherlock to be non-powerful in that realm, even. Even if Sherlock's not interested in sex, that doesn't mean he has to be ignorant of or afraid of it. Moffat specifically wrote him that way in ASiB to give Irene an edge over him.

BBC Irene is plenty villainous even without the connection to Moriarty imo. Using people's secrets against them, blackmailing Mycroft (Jim gave her the idea, but she was still did it, quite enthusiastically), etc...

One of my favorite eps of the old Granada series was the "Scandal" with Brett and Hunnicutt ... and despite Sher in a sheet I was bitterly disappointed with much of 2.1. The only interaction between he and Irene that had the tone I'd hoped for was the dream sequence analyzing the boomerang death.

(BTW personally? a) to me there's a huge difference between Inara and Irene, and b) yes please, I would like an AU where Whedon writes Sherlock and DW.)

That is probably exactly how Moffat thought about it--he probably sat down and thought 'HMMMMM how can I turn this character in to a huge allegory for why women are so weak and silly muahahaha!'
