Look, the main reason why people call Moffat's version Irene misogynist is because how she was changed from the story. How the hell do you go from an adventuress to a dominatrix?

Even worse, when she first introduces herself to Sherlock, she is naked. I know, Moffat wrote it so Sherlock would be baffled by a lack of clues. But here's the thing. There was still clues. The way she wore her hair. How her nails were done. What scent she wore. How she held herself. Sherlock had determined these clues on other people, why not Irene? Because she was naked?

Come on.

Sherlock has seen dead bodies. He has not been flabbergasted by other people's sexuality. (He deduced that the two detectives were sleeping together.) That's was just so out of character for Sherlock that the only reason to have Irene naked was to have Irene naked.

In the story, Irene comes out on top. She has outwitted Sherlock and has her happy ending. In the show, she is about to be executed and Sherlock MUST save her. She, again, unlike story Irene, can not save herself.

I know there is more, but, seriously, Moffat's Irene was indeed sexist.

Yeah, the whole, "Irene being naked made her unreadable" is bullshit, plain and simple. It was an excuse for some T&A.

DA

Exactly. Ugh that whole scene, I just, no.

That and it was also a rip-off Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. (The Irene Adler type character does the naked thing too. But it made more sense there. Unlike Moffat's one.)

Sherlock almost loosing that sheet isn't though, because it's only sexist if you objectify women, right?

Ben ALMOST exposed his ass, but didn't. Lara walked around naked for several minutes.

The fact that people even try to compare these two scenes, as if a man ALMOST showing his ass is the same as a woman being completely naked for a few minutes is the same thing, is ludicrous.

*facepalm* I shouldn't be surprised people do that, but I am. Like, wtf?

Yeah, exactly...

To be (mildly) fair (without defending Moffat) my understanding is that the term "adventuress" was a coded way to say a woman who got money/status/etc. through "questionable" means. Since being an actress/opera singer isn't a scandalous anymore, he chose something he felt would be. (Again, not defending the choice or saying it wasn't sexist).

This, what's left these days for a royal scandal? Lesbian domme about the only thing I've not seen already in real life. Also, maybe I'm crazy, but I'm pretty sure it's Irene calling Moriatry in the first scene, and she's the one that starts the whole shebang.

Meh. . .I know this is probably stretching it as a headcanon, but imo he couldn't read her because KATE got her ready. Kate put on her makeup and did up her hair and Irene went out naked, so all the information that Sherlock could have gotten off of her would have been information that he already had + her measurements.

Her portrayal IS sexist though (even though I still love me some Irene), but that's my explanation for that scene.
