Ah! I see you had a different idea in mind than what I was thinking when I replied. That's cool. :)

But now I'm intrigued! What motivated you to learn ASL? I'm just really curious about why and how people decide they want to reach outside their small circle of family/acquaintances/culture/etc.

I'm hard of hearing and even though I was "raised hearing" as they say I wanted to learn ASL as well so I could communicate with some deaf friends at college and then I found that in some classes is started to get easier to follow the interpreters rather than struggle to listen to the professors - especially in the bigger class rooms.

Now that I'm out of college I've joined deaf and hard of hearing groups in the area to join to keep my ASL skills up.

That's very interesting! Almost everybody I know of/have spoken with that learned any sort of sign language had a difficulty themselves, had a relative or a friend that had it, or were pursuing this as a part of their careers in helping children with different difficulties. People who don't have this contact with this sort of issue, like myself, don't really pursue it in a constant manner, just as a fleeting interest. It's sad to think that if you don't need it, you're so unlikely to care about it...
I'm intrigued about it myself, but there's nobody around to practise it with, and there's only so much interest I can muster about an online resource with no one to interact with .__.

That's usually how it goes. :)

and I hit post too soon! I was going to add that if you're really interested you should see if universities in your area are offering classes.

That's actually something I didn't think of :o I'll be sure to investigate a bit more, thanks for pointing that possibility out!
