I wish I knew. Do people not realize that the teacher/student power dynamic kind of inherently militates against that relationship being healthy enough, especially with all the now-revealed Lily issues Snape had?

I doubt people care that it is healthy. Some just make like their kink just like that. *shrugs*

I don't have an issue with unhealthy relationships in fiction, in fact they're some of my favorites... safe space to explore the more interesting facets of those unhealthy relationships and all that. So it's never really been that bugging me.

It's more... that it's Snape. I guess movie canon has a lot to do with this, but I'd never see Snape as someone you'd just randomly pair someone with for fun.

As a rare pairing, I wouldn't think twice about this (for Merlin's sake, I ship Draco/Seamus as a rare pair like my life depends on it), but the fact that it's so prevalent is honestly just baffling to me.

I can't venture as to how the prevalence *started*, but there might be something of a snowball effect. There were a few other HP pairings I read a lot of fic for, and I kept up with the general fandom Big Fics, but this one had by far the largest number of mature, novel-quality authors writing for it. The more I read, the more I loved it, and the more I wanted to read.

Disclaimer: still speaking mainly of the GoF-OotP hiatus period. I have no idea what the state of the fandom is these days, because I found HBP and DH so hard to get through I've never re-read them, and any fic that incorporates them as canon makes me feel lost.

Actually, writing it down like that makes me sympathize a smidge with OP. No, it was never going to happen in canon, but at least in the old days you had all kinds of new canon-compliant futurefic coming at you on a regular basis. I don't imagine it's like that any longer.

I think that's actually part of the appeal (to them, I don't really dig it much); to delegate responsibilities to a strong, intelligent man to take care of you.
