(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 03:18 am (UTC)(link)Moffat took a badass opera singer (and possible courtesan) who got the best of royalty and outsmarted one of the greatest detectives of all time and THEN got off scott free and ran away with her husband (yeah, everyone forgets about that guy) ... and did some questionable things with her character. Like having her appear completely naked pre-Watershed, for starters. I actually liked a lot of her character but some things bugged me, especially the "I am SherLOCKED" bit, I mean really. Plus she was the first major female character on an incredibly popular show in the age of the internet, drama was kinda expected. Molly and Mrs. Hudson and Sally and Sarah at least feel like real women, especially in season 2 (with the exception of Sarah, who just vanished.)
Inara was a mandated character Joss had to write in order to get the show aired. So, a lot of fanservice, like that ridiculous male-fantasy-lesbian sequence, but Joss did the best he could with a character he was actually forced to write. Some people liked her, some people cry misogyny, I'm just happy she was there because she was my first girlcrush.
And we're also comparing thirteen episodes of a character to one 90-minute story. Who knows what Irene would have been like if Sherlock wasn't just three episodes per season, or what Inara would have been like if Firefly had kept going?
And really, why debate this when it'd be more fun to write crossover fanfiction where Irene is a former Companion and hooks up with Inara?
