Sexism is everywhere, but I think fandom often does feminism wrong. Maybe wrong is too harsh. It seems people have the right intentions, but I kinda think more often than not, fandom feminism is influenced by what fans want to see happen with characters, and appreciation for context, flawed characters and plot take a backseat. I'm totally guilty of this myself, and I got very swept up in it for awhile, but when the dust settled around the wank, it seemed kind of misdirected in the end. I'm a hardcore feminist, but for the most part (not always) I now try to keep my feminism more vocal in RL than in fandom. I miss just enjoying shit.

Really? It's "too harsh" to decry huge heaping amounts of sexism in our media? You know, the media that's shoved down our throats every day? Oh yeah, better leave off criticizing that. God knows, the only way to encourage change is to silently accept what you're given and never criticize it or talk about its problems! After all, you might contribute to the "humorless feminist" stereotype!

Bullshit. You can still enjoy shit. Just acknowledge that it's problematic, stop defending it whenever people say it's problematic, and watch it anyway. How the fuck else do you enjoy anything on television these days.

P.S. There is nothing in the context, characters or plot that necessitate sexism or make it okay, especially when you're talking about a writer's DECISION to WRITE a sexist portrayal of a female character. jfc.

i don't really see the point of wanking about it, i guess. if it's sexist enough to bother me, i don't consume it. otherwise, i'd rather just enjoy it. to each their own, though. i don't really find any pleasure or entertainment in wank, whereas i guess some people do?

Just relax and enjoy the problematic, jeez. But don't deny to others the sexism (that is obviously to you still there, if you're a hardcore feminist); if they want to wank about it *at the same time* as consuming it. People do fandom differently.
