Re: Native languages
(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 06:44 am (UTC)(link)Also, some use it as practice to gain fluency. That's usually the piece of avice my teachers gave me: read a lot in the language you want to master, and if possible, write. And if you're used to associating fandom with a certain language, it comes more naturally to you when you start writing fics. You've got the vocabulary that you've learned while reading fic, and the basic structures and characterisations. It's easier to build on that than to start from scratch in your own language.
Re: Native languages
(Anonymous) 2012-07-28 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)It has improved slightly in Spanish fandom in recent years, but it is true most of the people you find there nowadays are people new to fandom (therefore most are young girls 12 years and up), people with more experience has for the most part moved on. Still, I've found good works there, but you have to dig for them a little bit harder than in English.
I agree with your teachers. I think my level in English would have dropped down if I hadn't been practising reading and, in a lesser level, writing in English.
