One guy to, lessee off the top of my head, Darla, Fred, Cordelia, Tara, Penny, Anya.......

On a quick google, http://meloukhia.net/2009/09/feminism_and_joss_whedon_death_and_character_abuse.html is a good essay about this... I don't think any single character death in and of itself is bad per se, but they all add up to a pattern that is pretty disturbing, particularly so from somebody who claims to be a feminist.

I love how Warren, shooting straight at Buffy while they were both outside on the ground, managed to hit Tara, who was on the SECOND FLOOR.

My sister once sat down and drew a diagram to prove that Tara's death didn't make any sense because there was no way the bullet could have gone through the window. At the dinner table. We have strange family meals.

One guy? Doyle, Wesley, Lindsay (if he counts, he was kind of a villain... sometimes), Forrest, Topher, Jonathan, Paul Ballard, all of Jonathan M Woodward's characters, Principal Flutie, Boyd and Jesse - who interestingly was totally fridged, his death served to hammer home the 'vampires are deadly' point and to cause some angst for Xander, then they mysteriously forgot all about him. And that list is just off the top of my head. xD

I'm not denying that fridging female characters is part of a much wider pattern and carries much more baggage with it - he does use women's deaths as plot impetus a lot and that's gross, but 'Joss Whedon rarely kills male characters' isn't really true. He kills male characters all the time and many of their deaths are every bit as senseless and predictable as those of his female characters (I'm still pissed about what happened to Boyd). There's plenty of issues with the way he writes women (and the way he kills women) but I'd say he's more of an equal opportunities fridger than a lot of writers!

Okay, I was thinking more of Buffy/Angel/Firefly... less familiar with Dollhouse as the story didn't grab me. In terms of Buffy/Angel, though, you definitely see the disparity. It looks like he evened it up more in Dollhouse, as I think the characters you're naming come mostly from that? If that's true then on one hand I'm glad to see that he's becoming more equal opportunity -- on the other hand, though, goddamn it does EVERY series have to have rampant fridging??

His worst 'male fridgings' are definitely in Dollhouse, but there's a good number in the Buffyverse - although now that I think about it, mostly in the early seasons. If you rule out Dollhouse, Buffy S1-4 and Angel S1 there's a pretty clear disparity, so maybe he just had a really bad phase around 2000 to 2003, idk. Buffy S5-7 is definitely the worst in that regard - that's where all the really infamous examples are, the only one I can think of offhand from the early seasons is Jenny Calender and I've seen remarkably few complaints about the way she was killed.
