My favorite thing about Brave is that it was relentlessly advertised as a movie about a badass bow wielding young girl warrior, and in the end the one that saved the day through some serious violence was her proper lady of a mother.

But then “Mama Bear” is one of my favorite tropes.

i saw brave yesterday with a friend, and i really reallly wish that i'd gone to see it with my mom a few weeks ago instead. mostly because i was totally merida (well, minus the badass archery and with the brattiness turned up to 11) when i was about 13-14, and i think she would have gotten a kick out of it. =]

(possibly spoilers ahead?)

and also because elinor was so amazing! her first reaction in every scene was to figure out where her daughter (or the boys) were and to make sure that she (or they) were safe and sound. i just went "aaaaawwwww" when she pulled merida's bow out of the fire and at the scene in the bedchamber when she was first turned and saw the bear shadow on the wall.

so basically, merida was great, but elinor was my favorite. =D

omg same about the Mama Bear trope. I thought it was really great that it was accentuated by the fact the mother and daughter were both fighting to help each other, but when Elinor rushes to save Merida from the bear my heart just burst
