F!S Anon Meme (the Seventh, and now on DW!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff.

you're not looking at its history; the Olympics way back in the day (think the good old Greeks) was a time when warring city-states could get together and not be obligated to kill each other

Okay that's nice but

we're in the year 2012. If any country wants to go to war, the Olympics sure as hell isn't going to stop them.

I'm not saying it is, but for some people tradition is very, very convenient and hard to break, so what I was trying to say but failed to is that it's something people (and by people I mean the governments and people with money) will cling to HARD

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Just cause it was done for a good cause in the past doesn't mean we can ignore how much more could be done *now* if it didn't exist. Do wars end for it? No. Does the money go to help people in need? No, it's used to build gigantic fucking stadiums that will never be used again. We can't ride on history and ignore the present.

NA

+1

ALL of the money going into the Olympics would be much better spent on actually HELPING PEOPLE. But no we gotta use millions of dollars to build stuff that will never be used again.

Except not all of the stuff will never be used again. My city hosted the Games ages ago, and now the buildings and facilities are used for a community stuff, concerts, all kind of events, and are open for sports clubs or school teams. The buildings where the athletes lived are cheap apartments for families or people with financial difficulties and students, and half of my cities' public transport system was built for the Games. Without them, the city would probably never have forked over the money to improve the infrastructure.

Calgary hosted the games in 1988 and built their arena for it in 1983 and it's still being used today for NHL hockey. Montreal's Olympic Stadium for their 1976 Olympics is still used for CFL plyoff games and part of it (The Velodrome) has been converted into a biodome. And it's not quite the Olympics, but there are still things in use from Expo 67 that was in Montreal. And where buildings were demolished have been turned into mostly parkland.

If host cities don't re-use venues built for the Olympics, that is their own fault. It is completely possible for them to be re-used.

I didn't get across what I wanted to say, sorry. What I'm trying to get at with the history and tradition angle, is that those are very convenient excuses/safeguards to people with money and governments. The people doing the building and stuff get a lot of money out of it (not the construction workers; I mean the people "funding" the projects), whatever the final result might be for the host city.

It's not going to stop because, interests.

I agree with you; honestly, we could have like, "build and renovate schools" and stuff competitions, or "help this community become self-sustainable" races, but nooo.

If these stadiums are never used again then that's the fault of the city. The facilites from when my city hosted the Games are still used, from the housing accommodations to the sports facilities, not to mention the improvements on the public transport system.

And lbh, it's not as if without the Games all that money would have gone to help the people in need.

Well these Olympics were invented in 1896, in France, it's not really the same thing at all. Not to mention the Nazis invented the Torch relay for their Olympics in 36, the torch being a Nazi thing.

Thank you. I can't believe how many people actually think the Olympics have been running continuously since the Greek age. It's a fairly modern tradition when you get right down to it.
