[ Anon Meme ]

F!S Anon Meme (the Seventh, and now on DW!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff.

Unpopular Ships
Obligatory Masturbation Thread
Fandoms you wish existed
How old are you?
What series have you always meant to watch/read/play/etc. but have never?
Time and location
Female-centric works
How do you feel about Tumblr?
Pet thread
Guilty pleasure thread
Favorite old shows
First fandom?

Guys I am worried about downloading new shows because the country I live in recently really upped its copyright laws.

BUT I WANT TO WATCH MY SHOWS IN REAL TIME.
I would pay for it if it was an option to do so, but unfortunately it isn't.

What should I do?

piratebay, check all the comments

people let you know when a torrent is being tracked

don't be too fussed. you'll just get a letter/email/phonecall telling you to delete the file you downloaded. sometimes your internet will be cut off until you delete it

you wno't be fined or jailed.

unless it's disney, they're fucking sue happy

I currently use piratebay but
The new law is saying that first offenders still get 2 years in prison and they have started cracking the whips.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
lol yeah right. They'd have to arrest the entire damn county.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Use IRC, it's super easy and I've never heard of anyone getting caught for it.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
oh thank you for this i will look into it.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you know any good channels? I'm mostly on the anime side of fandom when it comes to IRC/XDCC but I'd like to find out about movies/western TV shows as well.

Recognize that the world doesn't always work the way you want it to. Put simpler: Deal with it.

I hate to be that person, but I say don't risk it.

If you can, you could write netflix or hulu or youtube and tell them how badly you want to watch those series in your country

vov

Yes, basically I have not downloaded anything for the past 4 months because I don't want to risk it.

I get that it takes time to translate the stuff here. I can only hope Netflix will come (we already have Hulu but it is a joke).

Also under new laws, youtube is technically could be counted as illegal downloading because of how video gets put into your cache. It is all really crazy.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if Hulu is there already, then there is a precedent for other companies to look at and maybe want to give them competition. :)

Also under new laws, youtube is technically could be counted as illegal downloading because of how video gets put into your cache. It is all really crazy.

I like/hate how so many anti-piracy laws are so imprecise that we have results like these.

I hope this all gets straightened out, anon. Hang in there!

Haha, hello, fellow Japan anon. I've heard that's since been debunked, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends. If they have the means and are tracking actively (and if the Internet providers in your country are cooperating actively or the law forces them to do so) everyone's downloads (and uploads) then it's better to be in the safe side and don't risk.

If it's not like that, then don't worry too much, but if you can try to take some safety measures.

In my country copyright laws were changed recently, they even removed fair use and the possible punishment is exaggerated but... they have yet to even go against people who sell pirated movies in the streets, so I'm not worried, tbh. I'm keeping an eye on the new, in case that changes though.

get a program called peerblock and keep it on

it's not 100% safe but it's better than nothing

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Peerbock is completely useless.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
that's what i love about the internet, we can say shit like that without actually backing it up

but do back up your argument for me please? or recommend an alternative

What are your country's laws on streaming? watchseries.eu lists streaming sites for all kinds of shows, if (like in my country) streaming is still legal/a grey area you should definitely check it out. The episode qualities vary of course, but better that than getting into trouble with the law.
