Kaidan is my favorite Mass Effect Romance option. Even *I* feel like he's one of the more uninteresting characters, so I have no idea why I love the romance so much. The basic story structure, I guess?

He's not my favorite, but I do like the relationship between him and Shepard even if he's not a very interesting character by himself. As part of a couple, he's a stabilizing influence without being completely boring and his relationship with Shepard is genuinely devoted and loving. No big baggage, just support and understanding and a shoulder for the biggest badass in the galaxy to lean on. Plus, that voice. Unf.

All of this, exactly. (It's really true that he has the least baggage of everyone Shepard can romance, even Ashley, who has her struggles with xenophobia. Considering how supremely complicated Shepard's life is, it's never any wonder why s/he would find a wonderful refuge in someone like Kaidan.)

He's actually a normal guy, for once, doesn't have a problem for you to solve or an ex or a child who's causing issues. Unlike pretty much every other straight male love interest out there.

Plus, that voice. Hot damn.

I'm considering giving the Mass Effect series a go pretty much only for his sake. I really think he seems like a great character! Just can't decide whether to romance him right from the start as a female, or play as a guy and hang on till the third game.

I adore the Kaidan/Shepard romance, so you're not alone. Idk, I just thinkt hey're good together, especially the way I play Shepard.

This. Kaidan is a regular guy gone awesome, as is my mostly paragon FemShep. I loved how the relationship developed in ME1 - no bullshit forced drama or off-putting puppy dog schoolboy vibes, just mature adults sharing a mutual appreciation for each other. Similarly to what someone said upthread, I got the idea that they would both act as complementary stabilizing influences.

I agree with this. I always feel like I'm the only person who doesn't find him boring, but his normal-ness and maturity is compelling and attractive to me. Don't get me wrong, I love most of the other love interests a lot too, but Kaidan is special.

Also...he's seriously hot and DAT VOICE.

I don't ever romance him, but I do like his stability, whereas nearly everyone else has their ~issues.

...I think I'm a sucker for issues. Sigh. :P
