F!S Anon Meme (the Seventh, and now on DW!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff.

Very Important Question--Perhaps the Most Important

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Is Breaking Bad actually as amazing as everyone says it is? People keep hounding me to watch the damn show, but I really haven't had a chance, and I'm not particularly sure I even want to.

I watched the pilot when it first aired, mostly because I love Vince Gilligan (his XF episodes were always some of my favorites), but I turned it off halfway because it was depressing and made me super uncomfortable for some reason.

So, does it maintain that same tone throughout? Or does it get some levity at some point? Is it worth watching if I 1)didn't care for the pilot and 2)am not that interested in dramas about drugs/trafficking?

I like it a lot but I definitely wouldn't say it's a show for everyone. It can be pretty violent/disturbing

Er. If you aren't into depressing drama, then you probably won't like it. (It's not so much about the drugs, but how a prideful man selfishly destroys and manipulates everyone around him under the guise that everything he does is for his family.) It's a fucking great show, though.

+1

I do think it has some awesome humor in it, too, but the overall arc is Walt's descent into pure villian-y, and it is not fun or easy to watch.

It is however, amazing. One of the most tightly written, well acted, and beautifully shot TV shows of all time, with some really amazing characters (JESSE I LOVE YOU!). But yeah, if you're not into depressing drama, Breaking Bad is probably not for you, despite the quality level.

I LOVE JESSE TOO. GET OUT OF THERE JESSE!

I agree that it can be humorous, but in a dark way. Not worth for the OP if s/he isn't into depressing drama in the first place.

I can't wait until tonight. OMG, I love this show.

I just want to give him a big hug all the time.

Poor Jesse.

I stopped watching mid-third season cause I realised that I hate every single character in this show. So yeah, there are people out there who don't enjoy it.
The first season has actually more humour then subsequent seasons so if it's already too depressing then maybe it's just not for you.

It is as amazing as people say it is. It is incredibly well written, and has some of the best acting and most intriguing characters I have ever seen on TV.

That said, it is not a light show. It does have more humor than the first half of the pilot would suggest, but the underlying story is about Walter's moral decline and the way he drags everyone down with him, and it doesn't flinch from that.

I would say that the drug element isn't really that important, in a way. I mean, it stays super central to the plot, but in some ways it's just the giant McGuffin around which everyone's character arcs can play out. So if the idea of watching a show about someone's moral decline is interesting to you, I'd say go for it despite the specific subject matter. But if that doesn't sound like something you'd want to watch, you should probably just skip it.

From what you said, it sounds like you wouldn't enjoy watching it. It is an amazingly well-written show, though. I, myself, keep wanting to quit because I hate pretty much every character, but somehow they keep sucking me back in with their brilliance.

HOW CAN YOU HATE JESSE?

Actually, I said "almost" everyone because Jesse is the only one I still do like, LOL. <3

I just got into it and watched 4 seasons in a month. It IS stressful and it is sad, but it's fucking fantastic. The writing, the character building, the way shit comes together, the acting, the BALLS on the characters? SO GOOD.

though the first season is the saddest. After that there are sad bits but it's not as relentless about it as the first. (To make up for that, though, it gets exponentially more intense)

It seems to be a good show, but I lost interest after about 5 or 6 episodes. Some parts of it just move too slow for me.

I've just started watching this show a couple weeks ago because everyone kept saying how amazing it was. Finished season one, and you know, I can totally see why people rave about it-- it's very smart, great acting, very tight writing, and the issues it deals with are done so intelligently, with a great deal of thought.

But it is sooooooooo not a feelgood show. Like you, I find it almost too uncomfortable to watch. The violence, the despair and how trapped and generally fucked-up all the characters are, the gradual descent of the main character... oh, man. :( So far, the tone is pretty consistent through season one, so if you didn't like the pilot, I wouldn't expect to enjoy the rest of the series.

Yes. Yes it is.
