Some ground rules:

It sounds lame, but killing off (or otherwise getting rid of) canon love interests/people that stand in the way of my OTP, usually in ridiculous ways. "Oh, my wife just fell into a volcano, let's go on a date!" Or "woman realizes completely out of nowhere that she's actually a lesbian, leaving her boyfriend/husband free to get together with another guy".

Or mpreg sometimes, but it has to be plausible for that fandom. Sci-fi/fantasy fandoms, mainly, I guess. If there are demons/wizards/dragons/fairies/angels/aliens/vampires/whatever, it doesn't seem that out there that a guy could get pregnant. Or if it takes place in some futuristic society full of medical experiments or whatever.
