Some ground rules:

I found mine by hanging out in other alt-communities - RL fandom spaces, the local Celtic music scene, and Pagan events, mostly, but other people have found their way there via hackerspaces and other alternative communities.

If your local scene is integrated or you're queer yourself, looking for kink events in the calendars of your local GBLT publications can be fruitful, but there are places where the GLBT and het kinky communities don't really overlap.
