[ Anon Meme ]

F!S Anon Meme (the Seventh, and now on DW!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff.

Unpopular Ships
Obligatory Masturbation Thread
Fandoms you wish existed
How old are you?
What series have you always meant to watch/read/play/etc. but have never?
Time and location
Female-centric works
How do you feel about Tumblr?
Pet thread
Guilty pleasure thread
Favorite old shows
First fandom?

I want to fill prompts on a kink meme, but I'm not a native speaker and I'm not confident enough in my grasp of the language to dare try.

People have told me to do it anyway, but I saw someone else try it once, in such a cringeworthy babelfish-like gibberish, that it gave me the worst case of second-hand embarrassment ever, not to mention a raging paranoia: what if I'm just as bad, or even worse?

D: I feel your pain, anon. I feel your pain.

If you're really worried, you could try finding a beta reader to look over your work. But even worrying about the quality of your writing puts you leagues above plenty of people.

(Assuming we're talking about English, I would say, judging by your comment, that you're good.)

Trouble is, finding a beta is even harder for a kink meme than for regular fics.

I have the same problem :(

I'm not a native speaker either and I post fills on my fandom's kink meme, with surprisingly positive feedback. Judging from your comment, I say go for it. It can't be as bad as the fill you got second-hand embarrassment from, right?

There is no limit on the number of fills a prompt is allowed to have and people don't have to say "I have a potential fill," right?

So write your fill and don't announce that you're working on a fill. When it's completely, post it if you feel comfortable with it. Don't post it if you don't feel comfortable with it.

Based on what I'm seeing, I think you'll be fine.

Do you have a friend in fandom who is a native speaker (or just competent at English) who would be willing to read fills over for you before you post? I know that I have no problem providing beta services to friends who aren't native speakers, even sometimes when I don't share their fandoms, since they're usually looking for language critique, not character analysis.

just do it

practice is key

if you can, read books (like, by classic/pro/good authors) in English

copy your favorite passages

that kind of thing sticks with you and helps improve your vocabulary

leaf through a dictionary and copy words you find interesting or that you didn't know before and might want to use later

it takes time, but you need to immerse yourself in the language and actually write to get good

1. Judging by your post right here, you've got absolutely nothing to worry about.

2. If you're super desperate for a grammar beta, I'd offer. I'm probably not in your fandoms, though, if that's important to you.

I'm doing well, but slightly bemused since I didn't think I made an impression on anybody online....

ayrt

I remembered your name. You were one of the regulars. I haven't seen you for about a year now so I wondered if you are still following fs.

In many ways, I think I'm still stuck in the past... ^.^;

I only ever really commented on one or two every few days, so when we went to individual comment threads, I think I became very unnoticeable if you weren't commenting on the same ones. I still follow, though.

Find someone to beta read for you. You'd probably have to de-anon for your beta, but you could still post your fills anonymously, if you prefer. It really helps. I'm not a native speaker, but by now I've reached the point where I feel confident to post even unbeta'd fic. And that's largely due to the excellent beta reader I had when I started writing fic.
