Some ground rules:

I think the custom content has killed any hope for a decent community out of the Sims fandom. I have lurked on the official forums and they don't seem as douchey. Maybe it's because a lot of people who post there don't use a lot of custom mods. Or at the very least don't speak about it on EA's forums.

I haven't played with the pre-made's for awhile. I might have to pick up in Riverview sometime to get the Newbie family going. :)

I use the Nraas mods as game fixers, and to give me more god-like powers, but that's pretty much it for 'custom content' and mods.

The thing I like best about Master Controller is the ability for same sex couples to reproduce with each other and pass on their genetics. I don't breed my Sims, but I have about a 50/50 ratio of gay or lesbian to straight couples and I like for gay or lesbian couples to pass down their genes too. Fuck vampires, werewolves, robots, and other supernatural whatevers. In my Sim world, the fantasy element is the ability of same-sex couples to reproduce like heterosexual couples. In my head canon that's just the way that world works.

I use them the same way to have more control over my game and make it more "realistic" so that my sims are free to do whatever they want without EA's restrictions, but I keep the other supernatural stuff too. :P Although what I meant with custom content is the whole ordeal over paysites and people stealing other people's textures/models that I feel has tainted the Sims community. MATY/Pescado has a great mod going on, but the community there is shit. Lots of useful information, but you have to deal with all the crap there to find it. It's honestly one of the worst communities I've ever stepped into and all I do is lurk. TSR and GoS are just as bad with their drama too. After I found Nraas I only use his mods and it's a more pleasant experience to go and update from there.
