I waited until the third game, but that was because I wasn't really that interested in it before it became an actual option. I don't know why, but I didn't love it before I played though it. I'm considering going back and using mods to unlock it from the very beginning, but apparently you HAVE to stick with Shep's default appearance to do this...? I'm kinda partial to my custom Shepards, so eh :/ Anyway, I wouldn't be able to tell you if you've missed out because I haven't tried modding yet.
