Some ground rules:

It depends on a lot of things for me:

how long/plotty the show is (if it's a monster-of-the-day or slice-of-life format I can usually tell from one or two episodes; something that's more reliant on a myth arc I might give several more to get under way)
why I dislike it (kind of slow to begin/under-developed in the first few episodes I'm a lot more willing to forgive than a premise that doesn't work for me or really blatant homophobia/racism/whatevs. Bad acting (in a non-campy show) or an eye-bleeding/unappealing art style are both instant loses)
what I do like about it, if anything, and can I find it elsewhere (I'll put up with way more for a dystopian sci-fi show with absolutely no romance than I will for most other thing, for example)
