The Palomar comics by Gilbert Hernandez (also known as "Heartbreak Soup")
Some manga: Nausicäa of the Valley of Wind, Twin Spica, Claymore, Angelic Layer, Sailor Moon, arguably Kimi ni todoke (it's a romance, and the second most central character is a guy, but the two girls who become the heroine's best friends are right after that; and their friendship is almost as central as the romance)
