Some ground rules:

I usually make my decision by the first episode, based on how good the writing is, how charismatic the actors are, how good the chemistry is between the cast members, and whether or not the story line has future expansion potential. If it doesn't live up to that criteria then I just drop it without any guilt.

Someone else could convince me to pick it up though, if they tell me that there were some developments later on that piques my interest, but I haven't come across very many of those lately.
