CAN WE USE THIS THREAD AS AN EXCUSE TO TALK ABOUT A2A?

I miss it so much. :(

LoM is good and all, but idk idk. I preferred A2A. Gene was a more interesting character on A2A, I thought and I LOOOOVED Alex. Like, SO SO SO SO much. Plus, I still rank the A2A finale as one of my favorite finales ever.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-31 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of this (I still just about put LoM higher, because Annie > Shaz), but god damn that finale. It was a thing of utter beauty and easily the best finale I've seen in twenty-odd years. Easily.

The first time I saw the finale, I don't know what I was expecting. But I was NOT expecting to cry that much. Idk. It just gutted me. Guh. When Shaz, Ray and Chris watch their videos. And then the scene at the pub. And just... I was an emotional wreck.

Annie and Shaz are roughly equal to me, but I prefer Alex to Sam. And I think that Ray and Chris to got be proper characters in their own right on A2A more than they were in LoM, so yeah. LoM is great, but A2A has an edge for me.

i preferred A2A too, Alex was much better than Sam imo, and the series finale was flaw. less.

One thing I've noticed doing a rewatch is how annoying Sam is right until the end pretty much. Alex was annoying too (especially in series 1) but seemed to become more accepting of the situation or at least keep quieter about her true feelings. Also in LoM Ray only seems to exist to insult and antagonise Sam and he got fleshed out more in A2A to the point where his respect for Alex was more believable.

So yeah, I know it is considered fandom blasphemy but I think after a rewatch Alex edges it for me too.

Let's not. A2A is just a pale rip-off at best of LoM and Alex cannot hold a candle to Sam.

First series of A2A was a bit poor compared to LoM. But it gets better! Of course you don't have to take my word for it or subject yourself to something you know you don't enjoy but I just thought I'd put that out there. I almost gave up after the first series but am glad I didn't.

Series 3 is so perfect, omg.

LoM wins over A2A every time!

Although, I will say that I got to prefer A2A after the first series (I hated the first series and stopped watched about halfway through) but then decided to give the second series a chance and liked it a little bit more - still not as much as LoM though. However, I hated the ending to A2A because of the implications it had on the LoM!verse, especially the ending of LoM (and I loved how LoM ended).

Basically, I agree. Give me the grim LoM over the glitzy A2A any day!

A2A improved a lot though. The third season in particular was really good and explained a lot of stuff about the universe of both shows.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-31 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Trust me, A2A got better. Much better.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-31 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I know exactly how you feel. I just couldn't get into A2A.

i thought A2A got a lot better as it went on. I'm not too into rewatching the first episodes of the first series, but i loved series three and i really loved the ending to the whole show. and your secret's reminding me that i wanted to rewatch A2A!

Okay, okay... so... IS there anywhere I can get A2A in the US? Preferably legally? Or am I dead out of luck?

And sorry if someone else asked this already. I didn't read the rest of the thread because I didn't want to chance spoilers.

Go to watchseries.eu. Search for Ashes to Ashes. Find a stream that works, and enjoy! (Streaming is still legal!)

Ashes to Ashes was shit. It's the only show on television I wish I had never wasted my time on.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-01 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I always wanted a third show. Something along the lines of:

"Oh shit! I got hit by a car/shot/fell off a building and woke up in 1997! My phone doesn't have a camera on it! IT'S LIKE I'M ON ANOTHER PLANET."

*MMMBop plays in the background"

etc.

Yeah, I kind of feel this way too.

I mean, I do want to finish the rest of A2A one day; I only saw the first episode on a plane once. But it's just...I really like the color schemes and the clothes and the playlist of the 70's. I like the warm browns and earth tones. I love the 80's too, but, I dunno, not really where I like seeing the Gov.

Besides which, while I know it's a lot of fun and that lots of my friends like her, and I probably will too, I can't get over exactly how much like a self-insert the new main character feels. (Plus, the first episode of LoM is painful enough for me to watch--that whole "character not believing where/when they are, and thus acting like a complete loon" thing is a squick for me. So watching it happen again was even less pleasant.)

I'm having trouble seeing Alex as being a self-insert o.o What do you mean?

OP

That was pretty much my vibe too. I didn't see so much of a self-inserty thing going on as just her behavior being a bit daft, especially as she knows how much hassle Sam Tyler went through dealing with his apparent time travel adventure.

The Audi is really symbolic of the excesses of the '80s that I intensely dislike. The Granada - now that's a working man's car in a working man's city. None of this fake aspire to be a Donald Trumpish fellow kind of thing.

The guv doesn't feel right being in that Audi. He just doesn't.

Thank you for existing, anon, I felt very lonely in resenting A2A.

I've fast-worwarded through he show eventually and stuck around for the last three or four episodes.. Wish I haven't, it would be easier to ignore the finale that way.

I too prefer LoM to A2A, and the Cortina to the Quattro. 'Tina had style.
