freudism itt

I've a cousin I used to be super tight with back in the day. Whenever we met up we'd be inseparable. Then family circumstances changed, etc etc, rarely see each other any more and so on.

Well I was down their way for the first time in forever and stayed for a couple days.

I met their long term SO for the first time.

And slowly had the dawning realisation that they are exactly like me.

Perhaps I'm just being ego centric but the resemblance was there in almost every way, personality, looks, beliefs, career. Was a tad unsettling.

I think you're being ego centric. A lot of my best friends and my boyfriend are the same "type" of people but I wouldn't date them all. o_O I just happen to have a certain type of person I get along very well with and they each happen to be that type.

I always read that people who are related who don't know they are related (like long separated siblings or something) usually find themselves attracted to each other, so it seems normal to me if you cousin went for a person that reminded them of you. I don't think people do this consciously, lots of men and women go for people who remind them of their mother or father (even if they didn't even LIKE their mother or father!)

If anything I see the sibling/cousin attraction factor as a form of narcissism because people in families often share some of the same traits, either physical or personality-wise (NOT always but)

This is true.

It was very startling to realize that the traits I find attractive in the opposite gender were similar to those of family members.

They do say (very heteronormatively) that girls often go after men like their fathers and boys after women like their mothers.

When I first started college most of the guys I crushed on looked like male versions of myself and were usually into the same things as me

I think I married the opposite of my dad though (though the fact that I go for older dudes is most likely Freudian)

na

It took me way too long (several months) to realize the guy I was dating was a douchebag like my dad and I was reacting like the nagging housewife my mom is. Thankfully we broke up but man, what a revelation.

At least you never got married and then made a realization years later

I'm sure that happens ALL THE TIME

One of my brothers girlfriends had a bizarre amount in common with myself. Not so much in looks, but personality and hobbies. The more we hung out and got to know each other the creepier it got - my brother and I would joke about it in that LOLcreepy way.

They eventually broke up.

My brother keeps dating me. Even if they don't look too much like me their personalities sure do. I don't want to give him a complex but it is getting a little awkward.

My brother and I get along really well and have a lot of similar opinions and hobbies and even lived together as adults for awhile, so in a way you could say he's dating himself. Still weird.

New definition of boning has been added to agentcthulhu's lexicon. Thank you? xD
