Idk how famous it was, but I was in POTC fandom around the time there were some MAJOR ship wars/wank, specifically Will/Elizabeth (Willabeth) and Jack/Elizabeth (Sparrabeth). I went on a forum for Will/Elizabeth fans and the just major crazy I saw in ship wars was kind of intense. I loved the people on that forum, but some of the Sparrabeth fans were kind of out of control; I remember at one point one LJ community had multiple people watching/lurking on our forum to see if we were planning something.

I loved the forum I was on, but man that fandom was a bit crazy...
