But top/bottom dynamics exist between men too. I'm not claiming that yaoi is based on those dynamics, but it's not because one of the partners is weaker/more effeminate you have to equate them with an actual female character.

Uke characters are only "a woman" if you choose to see them that way.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So words are only offensive if you choose them to be.

If you want to refer to the top/bottom dynamics between men without the baggage of seme/uke? Then use *GASP* top/bottom or dominant/submissive!!!

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here: Well, either we are nitpicking about semantics, or you're missing my point.

I wouldn't call yaoi top/bottom as such because these are terms I'd use in real life, and associate with real people.

I enjoy yaoi, specifically drawing style, story style and (some) tropes that go with it, but I do not associate that with real people. Much i the same way I don't think Cyclops' powers could exist in real life.

I also enjoy m/m slash separate from that - and it those cases I'd use top/bottom or Dom/sub depending on the context.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you are a homophobe for using weighted words when people--homosexuals among them--have told you they are hurtful.

Just as you would be a racist if someone told you a racist depiction of a character you enjoy and refuse to acknowledge is racist because "it's fantasy" and "it's not real people" is hurtful to them.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, so it's homophobic to use words that are in fact the correct name for characters within a genre? O_O.

How is it LESS problematic to refer to them as to a r/l dynamic?

That just doesn't make sense at all...

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
All right. What do you know about Japan and gender roles?

Also, connotations. Fucking learn them. You either like to offensive stereotypes portrayed in the seme/uke stuff, or you don't.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I know gender roles in Japan are pretty rigid.

I like stereotypes in yaoi as fiction, on a sexual level.

I'm not rooting for these stereotypes to be acted out in r/l relationships, be it f/m, or m/m, or f/f.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Except that the stereotypes are still hurtful, which is what you're missing.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry my fapping habits are hurtful to you.

Fortunately, you'll never actually have to witness me doing it.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
We can tell fiction from reality and are quite capable of knowing not to apply a fictional construct made for fap purposes to real people. Not all yaoi is even Okane na Gai stereotype levels, there is such a thing as the sensitive seme and the rowdy uke, or two guys who interact some other way even if one is always pitching and the other always catches.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Go cry more in your hurt little corner or something

no one cares

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing you don't actually know shit about Japan and gender roles. I'm guessing you've never even been to Japan. (from someone who lives in Japan and reads yaoi, lolll)

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
lmao c'mon, SJW, tell us homos what's offensive. ohh yes, baby, do it.

PS, I kind of assume anyone who uses the word "homosexual" as an identifier for gay people is homophobic. so my fan theory is that you're actually homophobic and you compensate by being as obnoxious as possible.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
People choose to see them that way because they are depicted that way. They are drawn all delicate with big eyes, they blush, they cry, they are needy and clingy and overemotional...all negative stereotypes attributed to women.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"big eyes, they blush, they cry"

Sounds like my boyfriend, actually.

Sounds like you choose to 1) associate these characteristics only with women and b) see hem as inherently negative....

(Anonymous) 2012-08-02 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Then blackface is only offensive if people to see it that way! That's the logic you're using.

History behind something is important, and that you deny it is makes you an idiot and intolerant.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, ffs, not blackface wank again.

And you know what: if it turned me on, I'd fap to it.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
So you would fap to racist shit that is meant to demean. Even thought it hurts real people.

Wow.

You are a disgusting human being.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
My point is you're not going to take away people's kinks.

Best you can try to do is shame them for is (which, by the way, you're doing a splendid job at, so bravo!)

I honestly don't know why anyone would be turned on my blackface - but you know, I'm sure somewhere out there is. And they're not going to be fapping less because of your remarks, they'll just be better at hiding what they're fapping to.

also - Explain to me exactly how it hurts real people if someone faps to something in the privacy of their own room?

"Sounds like you choose to 1) associate these characteristics only with women and b) see hem as inherently negative...."

This. Virulent disgust at male bottoms is not something that can be separated from

a) homophobia
or
b) misogyny

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
You obviously don't read yaoi and are complying based on the stereotype of yaoi. Otherwise, you would know not all ukes are drawn like that...

[personal profile] stainless 2012-08-03 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
That was my feeling as well. I just kept thinking as I read those comments "Am I just really good at self-selecting for the stuff that's less "problematic," or do I just have a wildly different idea of what's offensive?"

I mean, I did tend to be picky about what I bothered with, but... even the stuff I didn't pay much attention to usually didn't make me feel demeaned as a woman

then again as a butch byke I was usually identifying with the seme and perving on the uke rather than identifying with him, so I'm probably doin it rong anyway

(Anonymous) 2012-08-03 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So you identify with characters who are usually borderline rapists, if not outright rapists. Nice. Hope you actually stop what you're doing if your partner is crying and telling you to stop when you're having sex with someone in real life.

Run that one by me again?

I like looking at drawings of feminine people (guys, in this case) getting fucked. That's about it. If you want to assume that that means I want to rape people, I don't think I can stop you. But if you're really concerned, rather than spouting shit on the Internet anonymously for lulz, feel free to contact any of my former partners and ask them whether or not I understand consent. I've got nothing to hide.
