Honestly, I'd recommend talking to someone whose in the military [specifically the branch you want to go into], whose not a recruiter. They should be able to answer most of the questions you've got - and they wouldn't have any reason to give you a 'rose tinted' view of life in the military.

Yea, this sounds like an excellent idea. I'm pretty sure at least a few people here on fs! have been or are in the military so maybe they could answer some of your questions too? But sitting down and talking to someone in person seems smart.

OC

Someone's already replied saying they are, but even if the OP can't sit down with someone, I know the different branches have forums [or at least, they did when I tried to enlist about a year ago] that have a large number of people enlisted as members. So, worst comes to worst, the OP could go check them out since they have a section for people looking to join/family of people getting ready to enlist to come and ask questions.

Oh, I didn't know such a thing existed. That's very helpful! I hope the OP checks it out and gets some solid answers.

This!

And talk to several people with multiple experiences.

I.e. those who were deployed, higher ranking officers, people with desk jobs (those exist too) etc.

Yes. Recommend this even if you decide to enlist as it will give you a better perspective of what MOS would best suit you, how to prepare for getting the best with your recruiter, and how to handle yourself.

Yeah, this, OP. I don't know if you have any family members or family friends or whatever who you can talk to, but if you live in a military-heavy area, you might have a neighbor or whatever that you can talk to. But this is important.

^^ this. From having military family plus knowing a lot of other military folk, you want to talk to people who have real, and varied experiences. The perspective of a 'Nam vet is going to be different from somebody who came in a few years ago for college, fr'ex.

And if you DO specifically go, get the folk you know to help you with a list of things to make sure to get in writing when you go to the recruiter, because those fuckers WILL take advantage of you if they can.
