I don't recall her speech in the books at all...

It was in them. Barely. I think she had maybe 1/3 a page? I know they made it longer for the movies but I remember at least that first line being in the books.

It was Eric who made the speech, since he was valedictorian, and it was only briefly mentioned, with Bella saying that she knew that she was at the end of something, regardless of Eric's speech about graduation just being the beginning.

But, yeah, movie!Jessica is actually alright. I loathed book!Jessica for being a selfish, shallow bitch with hopelessly juvenile concerns, but I'm pretty sure that characterization was deliberate on Meyer's part.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Meyers just didn't give a good goddamn about any of the human characters. The narrative also made Mike out to be a total loser even though he...kind of just seemed like a nice dude. I get that Bella wasn't into him, and that's cool, but she just seemed like an ass to him in her narrative with little cause.
