IDK if you've read the books, but most of the supporting characters are more interesting, well-developed, and likeable than Edward, Bella, and Jacob.

So at least the movies made an effort to be accurate to the source material.

that's because the three of them are the holy trinity of Mary Sue/Gary Stu characters, and giving them personalities would mean giving them flaws.
Which is something writers usually get over when they're in like 8th grade but whatevs.
