Protect missions. Enough said really, but they often make me want to pull my hair out. I'm always freaking out, thinking that the character is going to die even if they haven't come anywhere near it. If I remember correctly old school Goldeneye had pretty much the worst example of this ever. Or I just hated it an insane amount. I always cringe when I have to protect someone.

And underwater levels! DAMMIT SONIC, YOU SCARRED ME FOR LIFE.

bluh yeah protection missions usually blow u__u some of them are kind of fun (in new vegas there's an optional quest where you can choose to save the president from multiple assassination attempts and i thought that was exciting) but they're usually unnecessarily stressful lol

i normally don't like racing or timed missions either

I haven't gotten that far in New Vegas, lol. If I end up doing it, I'll probably hate it.

Racing usually sucks in games, yea. (At least games that aren't specifically about racing.) I like some vehicle missions (usually Halo), but overall they tend to be a pain in the ass. Timed missions stress me out something fierce too, so I agree.

there's a racing section in the original mafia that was so. damn. hard. we're talking almost legit impossible.

actually mafia had a huge number of really poor design decisions -- it might just be the 2nd worst game i've played this year. mafia 2 is so much better.

The best escort mission I've ever played was, of all things, Minnie Mouse in Kingdom Hearts 2. She's got the classic irritating features of most escort characters in that she's slow and won't really attack much on her own, but she's also got one of the most devastating player-and-partner commands in the entire game. The easiest and safest way of defeating the enemies in her segment is to just stick close to her side and spam her area attack until they stop spawning.

I love the Minnie escort mission actually! She was all kinds of badass even if she didn't attack often. If you timed it right she could be pretty useful!

Ugh, escort missions. At least, when the person you're protecting is a useless twat and there's no goddamn reason in the world why you can't just give them one of your 9000 handguns to protect themselves.

Though Halo's "Get behind me, sir" was the best inversion of this trope ever.

For me it'll always be RE4. Whhhyyyyy can you not buy Ashley a handgun? I would gladly have spent extra cash on it, so that she could do more than squeal helplessly when some (unarmed!!!) cultist picked her up and dragged her away. fffffffffffffffffff I understand why in RE2 you don't give the little girl a handgun but Ada has one and Ashley is a goddamn college student. Maybe she's never used a gun before, but goatfucking christ woman, the first time I used a gun I managed to not blow my own head off. It's not brain surgery.

I love Halo so, so much. That was awesome!

At least, when the person you're protecting is a useless twat and there's no goddamn reason in the world why you can't just give them one of your 9000 handguns to protect themselves.

And they usually are pretty useless, right? Even if they have weapons, they don't seem to be very effective with them. Arg.

Two subversions of this that I have ever seen, ever:

RE2 - Ada is not only 100% accurate, she has magical unlimited ammo. If you force her to walk in front of you she'll blow everything away.

CoD4 - Nikolai, in spite of supposedly having just been tortured, immediately picks up a gun and joins the rest of your invincible AI teammates.

I just played Fable 3 and oh my god. You literally have to take the person by the hand and walk them (though you can sometimes run) to their destination. And whenever enemies show up you have to let go, kill, and take their hand back.

The one thing that makes it okay is that they can't die. But still, ugh.

Re: game-related pet peeves

I adore Fable and remember that! That was one instance where it didn't bother me AS much because I knew they couldn't die. Which is always nice.

And plus it was kinda funny having to hold hands with everyone. :)

fuck escort missions. that's one of many reasons silent hill 4 grated on my nerves, like half the fucking game is an escort mission. NO EILEEN STAY AWAY FROM WALTER

Eileen use a guuuuuuun, is more like it. Or a club, or bat, or something. Why can no one but you use a firearm in any of these scenarios? Are you the only one that's licenced and everyone else is like "well I would but that wouldn't be safe, so I'll just sit here crying until I'm killed or maimed".

or the mission in doom 3 where you're supposed to escort a tiny little security robot and you don't even have to fire a shot. little fucker's just all BEEP BRAPPPPPP and there's dead imps fucking everywhere. one of the better parts of that game.

I know it's the stupidest game ever (i was a narutard...), but one of the Naruto PS2 games had three protect missions. Each one got shorter and harder. I pretty much gave up on the third level one. You didn't need to beat it to progress and it was literally too damn short to get through right. So I said fuck it.
elaminator: (SGA: Sheppard - Did not see it coming)

Re: game-related pet peeves

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-08-07 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I hate sections like that. D: At least it wasn't necessary to beat the game? Which makes it slightly less frustrating.

Re: game-related pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2012-08-07 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Escort/protect missions are maybe my biggest pet peeve with games. Even if they're done well. I couldn't play more than 5 minutes of ICO and after RE4 became escort gameplay I had to stop because it was so frustrating.

Re: game-related pet peeves

I haven't played ICO either (despite the wonderful word of mouth) for just that reason. IDK, maybe it's fantastic and I'm missing out but that aspect of it didn't appeal to me.

Aww. D:

Yea, I've played a few games where the escort stuff made me want to stop playing, but I try to tough it out. Developers never learn!
