Did you not read the secret? It specified MCU not the comics.

You're assuming that the two things aren't connected. MCU didn't appear out of nothing, there's 60 years worth of canon there and has a long and wide readership. Fans of the 616 dynamic of Tony and Steve aren't going to easily block that out so saying it's MCU and not comics is like saying the HP movies aren't related to the books.

Well that would explain why those familiar with the comics would be interested in it but there are a lot fans that have only seen the films and given the 4 minutes of dialogue and interaction the two had in the movie, I could see why some would be confused as to why MCU Steve and Tony is such a popular ship.

Hmm. Obviously, my judgement on this is a little colored, anon but because the fandom was in full swing basing things on comics canon before Avengers (or Thor or Cap, actually) even came out and still being labeled at movie verse, it's possible that some of that fed some people's ideas on shipping.

I mean, if someone went to Avengers on opening night, came home and looked for fic, there was already a ton and a half of Steve/Tony fic waiting for them.

I think that the only pairing that came out as 100% new from the movie was Bruce/Tony, wasn't it? At least I don't remember anything written for them before the movie.

For characters that existed outside the movie-verse beforehand? There might have been one or two things somewhere on the internet, I wouldn't write it off completely, but yeah. Bruce/Tony... and Bruce/Natasha were sparkly new creatures from the movie-verse as far as I know. I know Bruce/Clint had a following after Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes came out though...

But isn't that part of the fun? All the shiny new ways to play with these characters? It's been fun for me. LOL

lmao, marvel would so love if their readership really was as large as you seem to be implying it is.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-07 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Marvel might, but it's certainly a lot wider than people here are implying that it is or giving credit for.

... it really isn't. http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales.html

even allowing for pirating, i doubt it goes much over 500k readers wold-wide today. and while there aren't any hard numbers break down for gender available, i'm willing to bet a cornea and a kidney the overwhelming majority of this lot is male and not really the sort of fannish folk into cap/iron man slash.

it used to be much better in the 80s and early 90s, yeah, but marvel best selling franchise at the time was the x-men.
