This secret really depresses me for I cannot for the love of God understand all a fanfiction ever after three whole years spent on learning Japanese.
Please anon, tell me your secret, cause I realy want to enjoy Japanese fanfiction, but I don't want to check on the dictionary every five freaking words.

MH, sorry for my bad English, not my first launguage at all.

Not OP. This is the angry anon, actually. But if you use Firefox or Chrome you can get the Rikai plug-in or extension it will allow you to place your cursor over kanji compounds and words you don't know and provide you with an instant English translation that is usually correct.

After that I would recommend building your vocabulary up and drilling grammar exercises. Practice is the only way to get better. It also helps to have good teachers.

Thanks for the advices, kind Anon! I'll try from now on, but I kind of find novels simpler than fanfiction. Maybe my vocabulary is more accademic than I thought (still having trouble not speaking in MASU even after three months in Japan, ah ah).

As a side note, I have to say that the thing that probably is the most toublesome for me is understanding the various form of speaking of the characters. For example, I know that when a person finish a phrase with ZE/ZO is meant to be rude/masculine, and when it's a girl talking you often see WA. Since there are so many particular ways of expressing themselves with these kind of forms, I wonder if there's some king of list for understanding it better. Don't know if I made myself clear, sorry.

If you find novels easier, you can try finding older novels online using the Aozora Bunko and then using the Rikai plug-in. Otherwise, the quickest way to look stuff up is probably going to be an electronic dictionary. And then, of course, just building up your vocab.

For differences in gendered usage, about the only thing that will make it easier is just going to be experience. Watching dramas definitely helps some students. There are books out there that detail the difference between particles and formal/informal and gendered speech, but I haven't come across something that put that all together in a simple package. _Dirty Japanese_ by Matt Fargo is a fun one, though, and might provide a start.

Trying to read fanfiction after studying academic/literary Japanese is more or less like being thrown into Japan after only studying textbook Japanese. You get used to it if you immerse yourself in it because, well, fanfic has some sort of particular style that you'll never be taught in class.

I also used to find novels easier than fanfic, but now that I've got used to fanfic, both is pretty equal. (I do prefer novels because they don't use/overuse completely unnecessary Kanji and most Kanji that aren't jôyô get furigana.)

Just read lots and lots of stuff! Just, uh. Always keep in mind that fanfic Japanese is pretty low standard very often.
